Slow Start Bites Back

Another come-from-behind win was not in store for the Eagles on Wednesday night, as they fell to Point Loma.

LA MIRADA --- Through three of its last four games, Biola found a way to overcome a first half deficit to maintain its winning streak. Wednesday's matchup followed a different trend with the Eagles (19-5, 13-4 PacWest) unable to climb its way back to beat the visiting Point Loma Sea Lions (18-8, 14-4 PacWest).

A hot shooting Point Loma team jumped out to an early lead in the midweek contest. The visitors found good looks from long range to go 6-13 from deep for a 46.2 three-point field goal percentage in the opening half. PLNU also went 50.0 percent from the field.

12 minutes into the game, Point Loma opened up a double-digit advantage, which peaked at 15. The tide turned to end the half with a 9-0 Biola run. The Eagles bounced back to stay within range by holding their opponent scoreless for three minutes, while Alex Wright led the offense with five points.

Turnovers favored BU 3-8 through the first 20 minutes of action. Whitten Dominguez helped secure the momentum going into the second half, landing a steal and a layup within the final three seconds before the halftime break.

The usual second half Biola surge seemed to come early. Chris Rossow knocked down a deep trey to cut the deficit to six at 45-39.

A 14-2 run halted the host squad's momentum, reopening a double-digit edge for the Sea Lions. The visiting team only improved on its strong shooting, knocking down another seven three-pointers, while sinking over half of its attempts from the floor and from beyond the arc.

With five minutes to go, Biola put together one last push to erase a 73-53 scoreline. Rossow led the rally with six points, as the Eagles trimmed the deficit by eight. The 14-6 run featured five field goals for BU on six total shots, including a pair of three-pointers.

Unfortunately, the run ran out with just under two minutes on the clock. The final seconds ticked off, as the Sea Lions pulled off the 83-69 triumph over BU.

Four Eagles surpassed 10 points on Wednesday. Rossow paced the team with 18 points and six assists. Despite a below-average shooting performance, Wright came out with an all-around effort with 11 points, seven boards, six assists and three steals.

Biola will look to bounce back on Saturday, returning to Chase Gymnasium for a contest against Azusa Pacific at 7:30 pm.
