Esparza Boosts Eagles

Daniel Esparza piled on 29 points on Saturday, as the Eagles tacked on another conference win over Holy Names.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Biola men's basketball (6-2, 2-0 PacWest) continued its road trip and its winning streak on Saturday. The weekend matchup featured the Eagles against Holy Names (3-6, 0-2 PacWest) in an afternoon contest. A tough fight from the Hawks was not enough, as BU came out victorious, 88-79.

The Eagles were methodical and meticulous in the first half, winning in nearly every aspect of the game. The big difference came in efficiency with the BU squad sinking over 50 percent of their shots from the floor compared to a 36 field goal percent from their opponents.

Maximo Milovich and Daniel Esparza each reached double figures before the break with 11 points apiece. The duo mirrored each other with four field goals, one three-pointer, two free throws and three rebounds through 20 minutes of action.

The only success for the hosting Hawks came from long range. HNU tallied three more three-pointers than the Eagles in the first half, keeping them within reach at 41-32 at the break.

Esparza stayed hot to start the second half, scoring five points in five minutes. The newcomer would go on to lead the team on Saturday with a career-high of 29 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor and 10-10 from the charity stripe.

A quick burst put BU up by 19 points but as expected the Hawks had a response.

HNU clawed back and came within three points multiple times, trying to flip the script on the visitors. The Hawks upped the tempo on offense and found success, matching their first half points total after just 13 minutes in the second half.

Biola always had a counter ready for each Holy Names run, never giving up its lead. BU led for the entirety of the second half and held on for a 88-79 win on the road.

12 missed free throws plagued the Eagles on Saturday. The team earned its way to the line 37 times but managed just 25 makes for a 67.6 free throw percentage.

In addition to Esparza, two more Eagles reached double-digit points. Milovich finished the day with 18, while Alex Wright contributed 13. Wright played all 40 minutes of the contest and led the team with seven rebounds.

BU will return home for its next bout, taking on Point Loma on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
