Big Plays Not Enough

Biola basketball showcased impressive talent with its young core but could not overcome Point Loma on Wednesday.

LA MIRADA --- Two titans of the PacWest conference battled in Chase Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Biola (6-3, 2-1 PacWest) hosted Point Loma (7-3, 3-0 PacWest) in the bout of two undefeated teams in conference play. BU put together an electric performance on the court but fell short in the 87-79 final score.

The night started with excitement, as the Eagles jumped out to a double-digit advantage. Offense was coming from everywhere, helping the host squad to a 10-point lead after eight minutes.

Tyus Parrish-Tillman provided the highlight of the first half with a poster slam. The icing on top was the and-one the freshman completed on the back end of the play.

The two teams were headed in different directions after eight minutes. BU opened up with 19 points on 8-11 shooting, while PLNU nabbed nine points on 30.0 percent shooting from the field.

The pace changed with the success of the long range shooting of the Sea Lions. Five of the last six field goals from PLNU in the first half were three-pointers, as the visitors erased the deficit and went into the half up by four at 38-34. In the opening 20 minutes of play, PLNU sank eight treys on 50.0 percent from deep.

After the break, Point Loma stayed hot on offense but the Eagles always had an answer. The second half followed a call-and-response pattern with the Sea Lions threatening to pull away but the Eagles finding a big shot to reel it back in.

Twice after Point Loma took a double-digit lead, BU sank an immediate three to cut the momentum. In both instances the Eagles brought the visitor's lead back down to four, once at 12 minutes and once at eight minutes left.

Despite the resiliency from Biola, the Sea Lions kept pressing and flirted with a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Ultimately, PLNU would hold off Biola in the end for a 87-79 finish.

Newcomers and freshmen led the way for Biola on Wednesday. Erik Howlin offered up his best scoring performance of the year with 23 points and four long balls. The sophomore transfer was efficient with a 66.7 field goal percentage and a 80.0 three-point field goal percentage.

True freshman Nathan Medina added three triples and 18 points for Biola and was quickly followed by Daniel Esparza with 16 points on seven field goals.

Parrish-Tillman and Maximo Milovich did it all for the Eagles. Parrish-Tillman finished the night with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. Milovich contributed seven points, as well as team-highs in offensive rebounds (5) and total rebounds (8).

Biola will stay at home in Chase Gym on Saturday, taking on Concordia at 7:30 pm.
