New Year, Same Winning Ways

Chris Rossow led the Biola men’s basketball team to a win in their first game of 2022 on Thursday.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Eagles (10-2, 4-1 PacWest) opened up 2022 with a 90-82 victory over Hawaii Pacific (3-9, 0-5 PacWest) on Thursday night. Chris Rossow brought the fire offensively with 32 points, helping BU to its fourth PacWest win this season.

A 90-point showing for the Eagles marked the third-highest offensive output of the season. The single game total was the largest score against a PacWest opponent this year. Rossow starred in the starting point guard role, landing 32 points for a career-best in a Biola uniform.

The early going was tightly contested with neither team jumping ahead through the opening 10 minutes. Hawaii Pacific was the team to hold the lead after eight minutes at 16-14.

Three triples rained down for BU in the next three minutes on the court, helping the Eagles grab control. Alex Wright opened a 15-4 rally with a long ball, before Kevin Stone added his own three-pointer to cap off the run.

Stone and Wright were two of the top three first half scorers for Biola. Sophomore guard Stone came off the bench to tally a trio of treys in the first half to total nine points. The Mineral Area College transfer offered his best performance as an Eagle on Thursday, posting 12 points in the contest.

The second half was when Rossow came alive. The senior posted 22 points in 20 minutes played. Rossow embodied efficiency sinking six-of-eight shots from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers. The charity stripe was his friend as well, as Rossow netted 10 free throws.

A 12-2 run created the necessary separation for the Eagles in the second half. At the 10:18 mark, Whitten Dominguez got things going with a jumper. Through the next three minutes of action, Wright and Rossow combined for 10 points with only one missed shot on five attempts. The defensive effort saw two HPU turnovers, while holding them without a made field goal.

The strong push from Biola resulted in a 14-point lead at 70-56. The visitors carried the momentum through the finish line, letting the advantage remain at or above six for the rest of the contest.

Throughout the second half, Biola netted fantastic numbers on offense. The team converted at a 54.8 percent rate from the field, while sinking 50.0 percent of its three-point attempts.

Rossow paced the Eagles with eight assists on the night. The eight helpers led to 21 Biola points, bringing Rossow's total points contributed to 53.

Wright surpassed 20 points in the victory, going 8-17 from the field with three threes. The senior compiled 22 points, while nabbing a team-high six rebounds, one block and one steal.

BU will stay in Hawaii for its next contest, facing off against Chaminade on Saturday at 5:00 pm PST.
