Too Close for Comfort

The Eagles utilized a big first half lead to overcome a late push from Chaminade in the weekend victory.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles picked up their 12th win of the 2021-2022 campaign on Saturday night inside Chase Gym. The Red Sea came out in full force to help energize Biola (12-4, 6-3 PacWest) in a 75-72 nail-biting win. The host squad took down the Chaminade Silverswords (8-9, 6-5 PacWest), despite squandering a big first half advantage.

The early going featured a few quick buckets from CUH. The visitors put up six points in the first two minutes of action, while Biola sank just one free throw.

The 6-1 deficit slowly turned into a 23-point lead for the hosting Eagles. A 38-10 run defined the opening half of the Saturday evening contest. Through 14 minutes of game action BU knocked down 75 percent of its shot attempts, while going five-for-six from beyond the arc. Jesse Elrod led the squad with 13 points in the positive stretch.

The Biola defense stepped up, forcing nine turnovers with four steals to suppress the Silverswords' attack. The suffocating pressure from the Eagles kept CUH from getting good looks, as the visitors converted at a 22.2 percent rate from the field in the 14 minute span.

Chaminade responded in the final four minutes of the half to keep the game within reach. A 12-2 run cut the BU lead to 13 going into the halftime break.

Following the short hiatus, Biola regained its footing in the contest. Michael Bagatourian came out firing with six points in the first five minutes of the second half. The senior helped BU go up big once again, leading by 22.

The visitors would not go quietly though, chipping away at their sizable deficit. Initially, their defense stepped up to bring the score to 58-46, following a near four minute stretch without a single point from Biola.

With just over seven minutes remaining, CUH brought down the BU lead to single digits for the first time since the 12:00 mark of the first half. The visitors were not done there, bringing themselves to within one possession with four minutes on the clock.

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the ensuing three minutes, as Biola held a 71-70 edge, as the game clock ticked under one minute. Maximo Milovich saved the day for BU in the next possession, corralling a pair of offensive boards off of BU misses. The possession ultimately took 50 seconds off the clock and resulted in two made free throws from Chris Rossow. Bagatourian added two more foul shots to end the game, giving Biola the 75-72 win.

"I'm happy to get those boards and help the team," said Milovich, following the victory. "Chaminade is a great team, so we could not stop playing hard all the way until the end."

Elrod, Rossow and Bagatourian each reached double-digits in the scoring column with 20,19 and 18 points, respectively. Despite seeing just 23 minutes of game action, Elrod managed to knock down nine field goals on the way to his season-best 20-point outing.

Biola will look to stay in the winning column in its next bout on Monday against Hawaii Pacific at home at 7:30 pm.
