Sweeping the Sharks

Biola men’s basketball completed the season sweep of the Hawaii Pacific Sharks with a win on Monday night.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (13-4, 7-3 PacWest) maintained control throughout Monday night's contest against Hawaii Pacific (3-13, 0-9 PacWest) but could never fully put the game out of reach until the final buzzer. The Eagles finished off the 74-62 win inside Chase Gym over the Sharks to complete the season sweep.

The Eagles defense created separation halfway through the first half. The visiting Sharks could not buy a bucket through nearly four minutes of game action from the 11 to the seven minute mark.

On the flip side, Biola scored on three-consecutive possessions to propel themselves ahead. Chris Rossow led the attack with six of the eight BU points, giving the team its highest lead of the half at nine.

The halftime break gave the Eagles some needed energy, as they came out firing in the second half. The team's lead suddenly surged to 17 points thanks to a 9-0 run for BU. Through the first five minutes of the half, BU tacked on 15 points on 6-9 shooting and two three-pointers.

Jesse Elrod was feeling it, posting 10 points in the opening stretch of the second half. Through 27 and a half minutes of game time, the forward sank all seven of his field goal attempts, while leading the team with 18 points. The star talent ended the night with 21 points, while shooting 88.9 percent from the floor.

"I felt it within myself and within the flow of the offense," commented Elrod about his stellar performance. "We said that we wanted to swing the ball tonight and distribute on offense. I think we did that."

A 15-point BU lead slowly became a nine-point advantage, as the Biola offense slumped. The team went scoreless for three minutes but none other than Elrod stepped up and hit a three-pointer to wake up the crowd again. Back-to-back buckets for the Eagles rebuilt their double-digit lead.

The Sharks would not go away though, battling for every point and never letting the game get out of hand. The BU lead never surpassed 17, as the Sharks kept limiting their deficit to nine. Each time the advantage waned, Biola bounced back to keep its lead above seven throughout the second half.

Despite the effort, HPU never came within striking distance. Biola would go on to complete the 74-62 victory with help from final minute free throws from Alex Wright.

Rossow was a force on offense for Biola, pacing the team in points and assists. The point guard finished the game on top of the scoring column with 23 points, while dishing out six assists.

Including Rossow and Elrod, four Eagles offered a double-digit scoring performance on Monday. Wright and Michael Bagatourian each tallied 11 in the win. On the night, Biola was efficient from the floor, posting a 50.9 field goal percentage and a 76.9 three-point field goal percentage.

Rebounding heavily favored BU, as the hosting squad was tenacious on the boards. It was a team effort with six Eagles logging at least four rebounds, while the team outrebounded the Sharks, 43-30. Maximo Milovich used his length to nab a team-high eight rebounds on the night.

BU will return to action at home on Thursday in a bout against Academy of Art at 7:30 pm.
