Eagles Falter on the Road

Biola men’s basketball battled the Sea Lions in San Diego and came up short 79-69.

SAN DIEGO --- 27 points from Alex Wright was not enough for the short-handed Eagles (11-4, 5-3 PacWest) on Wednesday night. The BU squad took on Point Loma (9-7, 5-3 PacWest) in an away matchup and could not get the defensive stops, falling in a 79-69 final score.

Point Loma got off to a fast start on its home court. The PLNU offense was on point from the tip, hitting seven-of-eight field goal attempts to start the game. Through the initial five minutes on Wednesday, PLNU collected 16 points and built a seven-point advantage.

The Eagles responded with three-straight defensive stops in an effort to cut back on the early deficit. The visitors succeeded as layups from Michael Bagatourian and Maximo Milovich brought the PLNU lead down to three.

The host squad stayed hot from the field to keep the pressure on the Eagles. The rest of the half saw the Sea Lion lead grow, as the two teams went into the halftime break separated at 46-35.

Wright paced the squad in the opening half with 10 points. The senior only picked up the pace going into the second 20 minutes of game action. On the night, Wright collected a season-high 27 points, while surpassing 20 points for the third time in the last four games.

A 7-3 rally in Biola's favor started the second half. The BU momentum did not last long, as the Sea Lions turned their seven-point edge into a 17-point lead with a 10-point run of their own. The Eagles limited their deficit to seven just one more time in the contest with a Wright three-pointer with one minute on the clock. The comeback effort was not enough though, as PLNU held on for the 79-69 final margin.

Wright and Milovich shared the team lead in the rebounding column with seven boards apiece. BU outrebounded the Sea Lions 37-31 with a huge advantage coming in offensive rebounds, turning into 13 second chance points.

With the team missing its starting point guard, Bagatourian took on a more prevalent role in the offensive distribution. The senior dished out a season-best seven assists to pace the team.

Biola will return to action inside Chase Gymnasium on Saturday with a bout against Chaminade at 7:30 pm. 500 spectators will be allowed on Saturday with tickets available here - tickets.
