Walk-Off Win for Biola Boys

Biola walks-off in the bottom of the seventh to take down CUI 4-3

LA MIRADA, Calif.---Biola Baseball battled back to earn the walk-off win over CUI with a final score of 4-3. The Eagles never backed down and showed great fight as they were able to stay focused in big moments. Kapturasky and Gallegos both had big moments in the game for the Eagles.

Head Coach Jeff Calhoon had one message for his team ahead of today's matchup "Trust how we train and stay focused and we're going to be in great shape." The Eagles did just that in their 4-3 walkoff win against CUI, sweeping Friday's doubleheader.

Calhoon loved the fight that his team showed throughout the game. "What happened on the field today is exactly what these guys are capable of doing," said Calhoon. "It's great to walk off our home field with two wins, we've got to get after it tomorrow and work to take the series."

Brayden Englert got the start for Biola and started off the first inning with a quick ground out to 3b. After a couple of hits and runners reaching base, he was able to break out of the inning allowing only one earned run. CUI would tag Englert for two more runs in his outing before he posted back-to-back scoreless innings in the top of the fourth and fifth to end his day. Englert only surrendered two earned runs in his start over five innings while striking out four.

After surrendering one run in the first, the Eagles wasted no time responding with a run of their own. RobertAnthony Cruz continued his hot streak at the plate, roping a double down the right field line to score Ben Smith from second base.

In the bottom of the fourth inning down 3-1, Brandon Cody led off the inning with a monster solo homerun to right center. After getting two outs,Tyler Baca placed the ball on the ground reaching on an error by 2b to extend the inning. Baca advanced to second on a bunt from Johnny Sage to continue the inning by playing small ball, with the overthrow they both reached another base. A great effort in the inning resulted in BU coming up short and only scoring one in the frame.

Jared Kapturasky came in hot from the bullpen in the top of the sixth  to give Calhooon two scoreless innings. Kapturasky did his job producing quick outs for Biola.

Kapturasky returned to the mound in the top of the seventh, with his team down 3-2. The senior from Ohio got CUI's third baseman to pop-up a bunt attempt right back to the mound and induced an inning ending double play to give Biola excellent momentum heading into their final three outs.

When asked about his performance on the mound all Kapturasky could talk about was his teammates performances. "That play was the moment to turn the team around and the bats answered," said Kapturasky. "Everyone did their jobs today, we never backed down, we stayed focused, and were able to walk off the field with two wins today."

Down one, Johnny Sage led off the final inning with a double to left-centerfield getting a rally going for the Biola Boys. Ben Smith made a productive out with a sac bunt, advancing Sage from second to third base. Portaro kept the line moving with a single up the middle to score the tying run from third and bring up  RobertAnthony Cruz

Brandon Thomas pinch ran for Portatro giving the Eagles speed at first. On the second pitch Cruz, Thomas stole second, putting the winning run in scoring position for Cruz. Concordia elected to intentionally walk Cruz, bringing Gallegos to the plate, a decision CUI would later regret. After laying off ball one in the dirt, Gallegos drove the second pitch he saw down the left field line scoring Thomas from second to give Biola the walk-off win.

The win improves BU to 3-8 overall and 3-7 in PacWest play. The Battle of the Eagles continues on Saturday as Biola heads to CUI for two more games.
