BU Takes the Battle of the Eagles

Powered by four homers and a quality start from Larson Kindreich, BU takes down CUI 9-2

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Starting pitcher Larson Kindreich struck out ten in six scoreless frames while RobertAnthony Cruz launched three homeruns to lead Biola past CUI in the 9-2 victory in game one of today's scheduled doubleheader.

Kindreich returned to his 2020 form pitching six scoreless innings while striking out ten and earning his first victory of the year. The 6-4 lefty threw 108 pitches and surrendered only one hit to CUI, increasing his 2021 MLB Draft stock.

The first inning is all Kindreich and BU needed. The Eagles scored three-runs in the opening frame courtesy back-to-back singles from Johnny Sage and Ben Smith and a three-run homerun from RobertAnthony Cruz. Cruz continues to display his power but was not done as he added two more Cruz-Missiles in today's game. The junior went 3-4 at the plate while driving in 6 runs for Biola.

After Cruz's second homerun, Jacob Portaro chipped in with a homer of his own for a two-run bottom of the third inning. Biola brought an additional run across in the bottom of the fourth inning after Connor Kostecka battled in his at bat.  Kostecka fouled off seven pitches before reaching base with a single. He advanced to second on a perfectly executed sac bunt from Tyler Baca and immediately stole third base and scored on a passed ball.

Biola's bullpen carried the shutout through 7.2 innings before giving up a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning, scoring CUI's first and only runs of the game. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth, Head Coach Jeff Calhoon called on Gilbert Lopez. Lopez retired the only two batters he faced keeping the score at 9-2 to end the game.
