Series Win for Biola Boys

BU earned its first series win of 2021 by taking game four from PLNU, 3-2.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Eagles defeated PLNU in game two of Saturday's doubleheader with a final score of 3-2, completing the sweep on the day and giving Biola its first series win of 2021. After dropping the opening game of the series, Biola won the next three games and finished the season 4-4 against Point Loma.

Game two of Saturday's double header was a pitchers duel as both teams combined to score only five runs in the contest as compared to the 17, 9 and 19 runs scored in the first three games. Head Coach Jeff Calhoon and the Eagles continued a three-game win streak as they wrapped up the series. "Pitching was something else today, the guys on the mound were sharp and our bullpen was able to lock down the win in a tight contest," said Calhoon. "Tyler and Connor continued to have big at bats for us to bring in the game decinging runs, that was great to see."

Tyler White led the Eagles with two hits in three trips to the plate and was responsible for bringing home the tying run in the fourth inning. Connor Kostecka was 1-3 and drove in the game winning run for BU. Johnny Sage and Rhett Stein were both 1-3 while Stein also drove in a run for BU.

Gilbert Lopez got the start for the Eagles in the scheduled seven-inning contest. Lopez pitched three innings of two run ball on four hits. The true freshman struck out three and did not walk a batter or factor in the decision.

While the bullpen has continued to develop and be a question mark this season, the Eagles were sharp today. Keith Walker, Connor Butler and Tyler Mead combined for four scoreless innings and surrendered only two hits to PLNU. Butler earned the win and struck out three across two scoreless frames and allowed only one baserunner to reach via a hit. Mead earned the save, his second of the season, and struck out two in his perfect inning.

Point Loma started the scoring by bringing home Otto Kemp in the bottom of the first inning. Kemp would come around to score his second run of the game in the bottom of the third frame after recording a triple to lead off the inning and give his team a 2-0 advantage. Sea Lion starter Dylan Miller did a great job at keeping Biola off the board for the first three innings.

Miller's luck would eventually run out as he was tagged for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jackson Collins and Brandon Cody worked back-to-back walks to start the frame and Ryan Gallegos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With three on and no outs, Rhett Stein advanced all runners with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Collins to bring Biola within one run.

Tyler White and Connor Kostecka continued to produce for the Eagles. White stepped to the plate and swung at the first pitch he saw, poking a single through the left side to score Cody from third and tie the game 2-2. With the winning run standing 90 feet from home plate, Kostecka singled up the middle to give Biola the 3-2 lead.
