Down Go the Cougars

BU walks off No. 8 APU with a Brandon Cody grand slam in the 12th inning, 7-3.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It might have taken Biola 4.5 hours to earn the win, but the Eagles secured the victory over No. 8 APU with a walkoff grand slam from Brandon Cody in the bottom of the 12th inning. The win improves BU to 5-12 overall and 5-9 in PacWest play.

Andrew Beauvais turned an impressive start for Biola. The 6-7 righty pitched 6.2 innings while giving up only three runs, two earned, while recording five strikeouts. Beauvais did not factor in the decision but did an excellent job at holding the red hot APU hitters in check.

Tyler Mead, Connor Butler and Gilbert Lopez were impressive out of the 'pen. The trio pitched 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and limited the Cougars to only three hits. Lopez earned the win for Biola for his first career win as an Eagle.

RobertAnthony Cruz turned an impressive day at the plate going 3-6 with a double while scoring a run for the Eagles. Leadoff hitter Johnny Sage was 2-4 on the day with 2 RBI, he also reached base via the walk twice. Jackson Collins was 2-3 and Ben Smith was 2-4 with 1 RBI.

Biola was first on the board as they plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Portaro led off the inning with a four pitch walk and Brandon Cody took first base after getting hit by a pitch. Jared Collins was prepared to move the runners over with a sac bunt, but reached on a fielder's choice as APU could not record an out on the play loading the bases.

A sningle from Ben Smith scored Portato and kept the bases loaded for the Eagles. Johnny Sage drove in two more runs for BU, scoring Rylan Greenlee and Collins on a single up the middle.

After surrendering three runs to the Cougars in the top of the fifth inning, Biola held the eighth ranked team in the nation scoreless for the next seven innings.

The Eagles had a decent chance to plate runners in the seventh but left two runners stranded on base. Their struggles to drive home runners continued in the ninth as they stranded Collins at third base with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

The actionless innings continued as BU was retired in order in innings nine through eleven.

With over four hours of baseball played in the contest, the bottom of the twelfth inning is where the magic happened. Johnny Sage worked a leadoff walk while Cruz advanced him to second with a single. With two on and no outs, Gallegos executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.

APU Head Coach Paul Svagdis made the decision to intentionally walk Portaro to load the bases and set up a force at any base. The decision would come back to haunt the Cougars as Brandon Cody hit a walkoff grand slam to take down the Cougars.
