Big Innings Bite Eagles

Biola could not overcome the big inning in either game of today’s doubleheader against APU, droop games 3-11, 3-15.

AZUSA, Calif. --- On day two of the 2021 BU Baseball season the Eagles were hoping to bounce back from two tough opening day losses to longtime rival APU. BU could not climb back from big innings yet again and dropped both games in today's action with final scores of 3-11 and 1-10 at the Cougar Baseball Complex.

Although the final score didn't favor Biola, Head Coach Jeff Calhoon was proud of what he saw from his freshman with the opportunities they were given. "Brandon Thomas and Tyler White took advantage of their opportunities and had a good day for us," said Coach Calhoon. "We have some things to work on this week before we get back at it against PLNU."

"The results may not be there right now but we are all so grateful to be playing baseball again. We can't thank Dr. Miller and our administration enough for working tirelessly to allow us to compete this season," said Calhoon.

Game 1
Biola seemed to have turned the page on yesterday's losses as they drove in three runs in the first inning. After Johnny Sage singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Ryan Galleogs roped a ball over the wall in left centerfield, giving BU the early 2-0 advantage.

Following a double by Jacob Portaro, RobertAnthony Cruz drove in Portaro with a single up the middle for a 3-0 score in the first inning.

A strong start by the offense was followed up by starting pitcher Andrew Beauvais who held APU scoreless for the first 3 innings.

Beauvais would exit the game after walking the only two batters he faced in the fourth inning. He struck out one over three innings of work.

With two on and no outs, Keith Walker was called on for his first outing of the year. The outing didn't go Walker's way as the first three batters the sophomore faced reached and were driven home with a homerun from APU.

APU would hold the Eagles offense scoreless for the remainder of the game as BU couldn't overcome the big inning, allowing seven to score in the bottom of the fourth and two more in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Junior reliever David Ryan pitched a scoreless eighth inning only allowing two hits while recording one strikeout.

Portaro went 2-4 on the day with a double, a single and also reaching base on an error. After reaching base and advancing to second on an error, Portaro was caught stealing third base, eliminating BU's scoring threat.

Sage, Gallegos, Cruz, Andrew Lujon and Connor Kostecka each recorded a hit for the Eagles in game one.

Game 2
Matthew Watson took the mound for game two and faced the minimum in the first two innings and recorded a strikeout.

The third inning was filled with tons of action as Connor Butler was called on to pinch-hit and lead off for BU. Butler took advantage of the opportunity and hit a home run for the Eagles giving them the early 1-0 lead.

After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third, APU advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Watson would face the next three batters, giving up two hits and a walk to end his day.

Although the Cougars responded with two runs of their own, AJ Ortiz stole the show in the bottom third inning. He found himself in a bases loaded jam with no outs and two runs already coming across in the inning.

Ortiz could not have asked for a better end of the inning as he proceeded to strikeout the next three batters he faced while keeping BU within one run of APU.

The big innings continue to pose a threat for BU as they allowed four runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and four more in the sixth for a 1-15 score after six.

BU would add two more runs in the top of the seventh on a Tyler White home run over the left field wall to bring the final score to 3-15. The Cougars limited BU to only three hits on the day.

Gilbert Lopez and Honus Kindreich pitched scoreless innings for the Eagles out of the pen.

Biola looks to bounce back as they head to Point Loma on Friday, March 26 for two games. Live video and stats can be found here.
