Hot Offense Not Enough

BU drops both games of today's season opener against APU, 4-6 & 8-10.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola (0-2, 0-2) opened the season and PacWest play today against longtime rivals Azusa Pacific (9-2, 2-0). While the Eagles bats were hot in both games, the pitching stumbled out of the gate and the offense could not close the deficit.

While the two losses are a tough way to open the season, Head Coach Jeff Calhoon chose to focus on the positives from today's contests. "It's hard to bounce back from a rough first innings but both starting pitchers did just that," said Calhoon

"The offense went punch for punch with APU and were never out of the fight. APU is a solid team and there's a reason they're ranked No. 8. I look forward to getting the guys back on the field to compete tomorrow."

Sophomore Brayden Englert was given the nod in game one of today's doubleheader action. APU came into the series having already played nine games to a 7-2 record. Their offense proved ready for the Eagles pitching staff, they opened the game with back-to-back hits and added a homerun to the first inning, taking the early lead 3-0.

After a rough first inning, Englert would find his groove. He held the Cougars scoreless in the second and third innings before giving up a long ball in the fourth inning.

Englert was sharp throughout his seven innings pitched with the exception of the two long balls. He held APU to four earned runs off six hits, two of which were home runs, and logged four strikeouts on the mound today.

Ryan Gallegos and Brandon Cody lead the hot offense as they both went two-for-four at the plate while driving in two runs a piece. RobertAnthony CRuz and Connor Kostecka chopped in with a hit each.

BU Baseball ace Larson Kindreich took the mound for game two for the first time in over a year and suffered a tough first couple of innings. The 6'4 lefty gave up seven runs in the first two innings which is completely out of character for the draft prospect who did not give up an earned run in 2020. Kindreich would soon return to form and get through four innings while racking up seven strikeouts for the Eagles.

Coach Calhoon was most impressed with his lefty's mound presence. "It's tough to get back on the mound and get to work after giving up seven in the first two," said Calhoon. "But Larson went right back out there and handled his business and showed great composure. That's all you can ask for from a guy in that spot."

The offense kept rolling in game two and kept BU in the game scoring eight runs to APU's ten. It was Jared Portaro and RobertAnthony Cruz who led the Eagles in hits with three each. Portaro scored three runs while driving in one while Cruz scored one and drove in three.

Evan Rowe and Brandon Cody each added two hits for the Eagles to boost the offense. Rowe got things going with a long ball in the second inning and doubled in the fifth, driving in Cruz to bring the Eagles within one.

APU would go on to win the game 10-8 after an incredible effort by BU.

Biola is back in action on Saturday, March 20 as they head to Azusa to complete the four game series. Follow the action with the live stream and live stats provided by APU.
