Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Biola Proves The Better Birds

Biola Eagles beat the Concordia Eagles by nearly 20 points in first game since January 22.

IRVINE, Calif. --- It was not too much of a battle on Friday night in Irvine as Biola Men's Basketball dealt handily with the Concordia Irvine Eagles in what was BU's first game in 13 days.

Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's squad was sharp, energized, controlled the ball and looked locked in from the opening tip in this one. The Eagles never trailed, led by 20+ multiple times throughout and dominated the boards en route to their second win of the 2021 season (win 994 overall for Holmquist). The final score fell in favor of Biola at 94-78.

The 92 points is a new season-high for Holmquist's side. The Eagles also had season-bests in made field goals (38), field goal percentage (61.3), 3-point field goal percentage (83.3), fewest turnovers (7) and steals (9).

Michael Bagatourian paced BU in the first half, he scored 16 points in the opening 20 minutes to lead BU to a 45-37 lead at the halftime break.

Alex Wright and Chris Rossow joined Bagatourian with the impressive production once the second half began. Rossow scored seven second-half points to go with eight second-half dimes and Wright seven second-half points as six Biola scorers finished with 10+ points in this one.

Biola scored 17 of the first 22 points in the second half to extend their 8-point lead into a 20-point advantage with 14 minutes left. From there on out solid three-point shooting, great execution at holding onto the ball (only two turnovers in the final eight minutes) and continued strong rebounding leading to the win.

Biola finished the game with a 28-19 rebounding advantage, spearheaded by seven from Wright and six from Bagatourian. The Eagles also forced 17 turnovers from the hosts, leading to 19 additional points for BU.

The Eagles of La Mirada dominated inside scoring 58 points in the paint compared to just 24 interior points for CUI.

All in all there were zero signs of rust after having to miss games last week with Point Loma postponing the PacWest doubleheader due to COVID-19 protocols.

Bagatourian was the game's leading scorer overall, finishing one point shy of his season-high with 21. Joining him with 10+ points were Wright (15), Rossow (15), Whitten Dominguez (11), Jesse Elrod (11) and Maximo Milovich (12).

Dominguez was effective as could be in his 35 minutes. He was 3-for-4 from the field, 4-for-4 from the line and contributed four rebounds, four assists and three steals to the effort.

Solomon Ruddell also added a strong 15 minutes with 4-for-6 shooting allowing for eight points to go with three rebounds.

Biola improves to 2-2 (2-1 PacWest) with the win. Concordia Irvine drops to 0-6 (0-5 PacWest) with the loss. The two teams go at it again on Saturday with a 7 p.m. (or so) tip-off inside of Chase Gym). Catch that game live on the Biola Athletics YouTube.
