Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wright Place, Wright Time

Alex Wright continued his incredible season with a massive double-double in a win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Saturday's Biola Men's Basketball game was certainly not the same script as Friday night's blowout victory over Concordia Irvine, in fact, it was quite the opposite on Saturday in Chase Gym.

In fact, this 80-70 basketball game was so intense it even had Concordia Irvine's head coach kicking the Biola scorer's table at times on Saturday evening. There was no clear "better" team until Biola, specifically Chris Rossow and Alex Wright, really took over the game over the final five minutes or so of the game.

Rossow finished the game making six of his final seven field goal attempts to turn a rather paltry first half into a really nice stat line at the end of the game. Most importantly, his effective, athletic cuts to the basket over those final five minutes earned Biola the win.

Biola used a 15-5 run from 5:28 down to 00:35 in the second half to finally cement itself as the superior side on Saturday, fending off a pesky effort from the winless Concordia side.

The Eagles' scoring during that stretch run came entirely from Rossow (6), Wright (7) and Michael Bagatourian. Those three account for 59 percent of Biola's scoring this season, so seeing those numbers spells a recipe for success.

Wright had an absolutely mind-boggling performance in this one as he continues to build a case for potential PacWest Conference Player of the Year honors with only Point Loma's Kaden Anderson keeping pace with the junior's numbers to this point in the year.

Tonight, Wright had 28 points and 13 rebounds to nab his third double-double in five games for BU. He's now averaging 17.4 points-per-game and 10.0 rebounds-per-game this season.

Biola finished off Concordia Irvine by shooting 4-for-6 in that late run, but perhaps even more importantly hitting all seven free-throws they were awarded in those minutes. Biola was 16-for-20 on the night from the free-throw line and shot a perfect 50 percent from the field.

Before Biola managed to take the lead and hold onto it late, this game was a wild see-saw affair with 13 lead changes and eight tie scores. The last time Concordia led was 61-60 with 6:43 to play. Concordia simply could not keep up with the scoring volume late in the game and Biola's defense did well to not allow a single CUI free throw over the final seven minutes of this one.

One stat that stands out is Biola's ability to convert turnovers. Concordia Irvine only coughed the ball up 11 times in this one, which is a season-low for a Biola opponent. However, the Eagles managed to turn those 11 turnovers into 18 additional points.

Just like last night Biola had a huge rebounding advantage here, powered mostly by Wright's crooked number. The Eagles had 38 boards (11 offensive) while holding CUI to just 24.

To continue to drive home just how competitive this game was, Biola led for exactly 49.5 percent of the game, with Concordia also leading to 45+ percent of the contest and a wee bit of time spent tied. It was Biola's lowest percentage of time with the lead in a win this season (by a full 30 percent).

Rossow's big second half helped him to a 25-point night on 11-for-23 shooting and a perfect 3-for-3 from the stripe. Bagatourian also closed out in double figures with 12 points. Bagatourian has scored 10+ in 12-straight games.

The win helps Biola pull out to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in PacWest Conference competitions. Biola will get back to the grind next week with a pair of Cornerstone Cup matchups against Azusa Pacific (3-1; 3-1 PacWest). The Cougars host Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Biola returns the favor Saturday at the same time.

Dr. Dave Holmquist is now up to 995 careed coaching victories.
