SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The saying "mi casa es su casa" seemingly does not apply when it comes to Biola and Point Loma Men's Basketball. After Biola led last night's game wire-to-wire inside it's home gymnasium, Point Loma returned the favor at their home place on Saturday to split the weekend series and remain neck-and-neck atop the PacWest.
Scorching three-point shooting by the hosts throughout the first half enabled Point Loma to take a 24-point lead into the locker room at the game break. Biola was able to dampen the offense from the Sea Lions in the second half and even managed to cut the game down to just a paltry five points at one point, but it never clawed all the way back.
Point Loma made free throws down the stretch and took advantage of a season-high 17 Biola turnovers to end the game on an 11-3 scoring run and lock this one up by a final tally of 80-66.
Biola outscored the Sea Lions 42-32 in the second half, using five made threes in the first five minutes or so of the second period to really dig into the Loma lead. That was five times the number of triples Biola was able to hit the entire first half (1-for-12).
Michael Bagatourian had two of those five second-half three-point makes. He was the pacemaker for Biola's comeback attempt, scoring 11 of his team-high 16 points during the second half.
However, Point Loma found a way to keep Bagatourian off the board for the final 7:58 of the contest and that would make a huge difference in Biola's ability to offer up different looks on the offensive end and create open opportunities.
For the game Biola would end up shooting 42 percent and managed to out-rebound Point Loma 41-31, but the Sea Lions' 12 three-pointers and massive advantage in the turnover column (17-5) would win them the game.
Point Loma had two guys end with 20+ points, while Bagatourian's 16 would lead the Eagles. Alex Wright (13) and Jesse Elrod (10) would also reach double figures for BU. Chris Rossow persevered through a challenging shooting night to finish up helping the team in other ways with nine points, eight assists and five rebounds.
The loss splits the weekend for these two sides and drops Biola to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in PacWest Conference play. Point Loma is now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference. Biola plays its final regularly scheduled regular season contests next week against Concordia Irvine. The Eagles host CUI on Friday and play at CU Arena on Saturday.
They will get another stab at win number 999 for Dr. Dave Holmquist on Friday night. Watch it live at https://www.youtube.com/user/BiolaAthletics.
