LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball continued its steady march towards two major moments with a blowout win over Concordia Irvine on Friday afternoon. Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist's side continued to put itself in a really good position for NCAA postseason selection with the win, and also the Eagles handed Holmquist his 999th career coaching victory.
The Eagles never once allowed Concordia Irvine to lead the game, taking a 9-0 start and cashing it in to an 82-65 final. It was a contest where the starters earned some extra rest against a CUI side who's still struggling to find traction in 2020-21.
This win clinches the season series victory for Biola, who sits at 3-0 against CUI this season heading into tomorrow's regular season finale. There is a chance Biola and Point Loma will play a make-up game or two next week, but this is still TBD.
"Regardless of what happens tomorrow night, I'm really proud and happy with our team," said Holmquist. "We only played the best teams in the conference. All three of them were picked above us in the poll they had before the year. For this team to do what they've done has been impressive."
Impressive sure was the right word for the display Biola put on inside the friendly (and spacious) confines of Chase Gymnasium on Friday. Biola shot 55 percent for the evening (33-for-60), including 44 percent from deep (7-for-16) and led by 10 points or more for over 25 of the 40 minutes played.Â
Whitten Dominguez was nails for the Eagles as he ended with a team-high 21 points, which is just three off his career-high and the most he's had in a game since Feb. 22, 2020.
The junior shot 8-for-11 with three of Biola's seven made three-pointers. His eight field goals was matched by freshman
Maximo Milovich who really made the most of his 23 minutes of opportunity with 19 points, four rebounds and a pair of blocks. Milovich was even just a bit more efficient than Dominguez, finishing 8-for-10 from the floor.
The Eagles were shutting people down in the painted area with authority on Friday. The team compiled nine blocks in this one, led by five from
Jesse Elrod. Both the team total and Elrod's individual mark tie Biola's NCAA-era record for single-game blocks.
Free throws were few and far between in this game as the referees were letting the game go relatively free and easy (only 25 total fouls). Biola made the most of its chances at the stripe though, going 9-for-9.
Alex Wright's 4-for-4 performance paced that effort. Wright was one of four Biola players in double-digits in this one, ending with 17. Dominguez' 21, Milovich's 19 and 12 from
Michael Bagatourian.
Chris Rossow, as usual, was the one providing the bullets for the buckets. He ended with eight assists to keep himself firmly inside the top-5 in all of NCAA Division II in assists-per-game (6.9).
His assists-per-game average is currently the third-best single-season assist average in program history (Mike Coffin - 91/92; David Parker 76/77).
Coach Holmquist reflected a bit on the quality of this year's team, and all his teams, as he reflected on what it means to be getting closer to 1,000 wins.
"All of these things are shared honors. You win games because you have very good players," said Holmquist. "No coach wins without having many good players. I've had them. I think this will be a memorable year. Not just because it's been so different, but also because we've all learned to live more a day at a time. There have been surprises and adjustments and so many things you can't control and they've done well."
The win helps Biola improve to 7-3 (7-2 PacWest) while the visitors fell to 1-11 (1-10 PacWest). Both sides will have another chance at each other Saturday in Irvine at 4:30 p.m. Watch coach Holmquist's first attempt at win No. 1,000 live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/cui/.
