Shooting Woes Spoil Home Opener

A low-scoring affair resulted unfavorably for Biola, as they dropped their home opener to Cal Poly Pomona.

LA MIRADA --- A crowd grew inside Chase Gymnasium for Biola's first home men's basketball game of the 2021-22 campaign. The Eagles saw their home fans come out in full force for the first time in over a year, as they took the court against Cal Poly Pomona. Unfortunately, the visitors won the battle with a 60-49 final score.

The BU offense never found its stroke on Saturday night. The team was held under 50 points, while logging a 34.5 field goal percentage. Long range and free throw shooting did not look any better for Biola, as the team made two of 18 shots from beyond the arc and shot 42.9 percent from the foul line.

Despite the struggles, Biola kept pace with the Broncos throughout the game. In the opening half, CPP gathered a 13 point advantage but the hosting Eagles brought it back within reach for a 28-20 halftime score.

The outlook of the game seemed to change, coming out of the break. Biola immediately posted an eight-point run to tie the game at 28 points apiece. The Eagles found four good looks near the rim for four layups in the run. This two and a half minute run to start the second half caused a quick timeout from the Cal Poly Pomona coaching staff.

The two teams continued to play even for the next three minutes of game action, leading to another tie at 32. Then the tide turned and fortune quickly favored the Broncos. CPP rattled off a 22-2 run that created plenty of separation with five minutes left in the game.

The Eagles regained their composure and cut their deficit down to 11 but did not have enough time to complete a comeback.

Maximo Milovich shined in his second start this season, notching his second double-double as a Biola Eagle. The 6-8 forward went to work in the paint, posting 15 points on 7-10 shooting, while grabbing five offensive rebounds and six defensive boards.

Biola won the battle on the boards, 40-35, over the visitors. Offensive rebounds played a major role with the Eagles nabbing 16, leading to nine second-chance points.

BU (3-1) will look to bounce back on Tuesday, as they return to Chase Gymnasium for a bout against San Diego Christian at 7:30 pm.
