The Return

The BU men’s basketball team featured the same starting five from last season, as they opened the new campaign with a win.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Coming off a trip to the NCAA DII West Region Championships, the Eagles returned to the court for their 2021-22 season. The season opener featured the return of all five starters for Biola from last season.

The veteran leadership and valuable experience helped the BU squad begin the new campaign with a successful matchup in the CCAA-PacWest Challenge. Biola took down Cal State LA on a neutral court, 86-67, on Friday night.

The offensive effort was well-rounded in the rout with five Eagles reaching double-digits in the scoring column. Alex Wright led the way, posting 16 points on 6-10 shooting and three long balls.

A nine-point run for the Eagles gave them the first separation of the game. Freshman Omari Maulana made his debut on Friday and hit a pair of three pointers in the early BU rally.

12 minutes into the contest, Biola built a 23 point advantage following another favorable 13-0 stretch. The BU defense was suffocating, forcing six missed shots and one turnover through five Cal State LA possessions.

The Biola lead ballooned to 28 in the first half, before reaching a game-high in the second half at 31 points. From the tip to the final buzzer, BU maintained control of the game for the 86-67 rout.

Michael Bagatourian was second on the list of top scorers with 15 points on the night. The senior recorded five field goals and five rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

Three Eagles nabbed exactly 10 points in the win, including Whitten Dominguez, Kevin Stone and Maximo Milovich. The trio combined to go 65.0 percent from the floor and was led by Stone who was a perfect 4-4 shooting with a pair of treys.

BU dominated in rebounds and bench points on Friday. Biola led Cal State LA, 36-23, in total boards, while turning 10 offensive rebounds into 15 points, which outpaced their opponent by 13.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday to finish the CCAA-PacWest Challenge with a matchup against The Master's.
