Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Never A Doubt

Biola Men's Basketball remains undefeated with dominant second half.

IRVINE, Calif. --- A second-half surge led the Biola Eagles to avenge the PacWest Conference in its matchup against The Master's University on Saturday evening in Irvine. Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's side outscored the Mustangs 52-36 in the second half to win the game, 76-63.

The win lifts Biola to a perfect 2-0 to begin the year and makes up for host institution Concordia Irvine's loss to TMU just last night. This is Biola's first 2-0 start since its final NAIA season in 2016-17, a year where Holmquist's side finished 26-6.

Biola led by as much as seven early on with another strong start putting the Eagles ahead 16-9 nine minutes in. After TMU pulled it back within two, a pair of Kevin Stone free throws got Biola back to breathing room at 24-18 with about five minutes left in the half.

That advantage disappeared as the Eagles were held scoreless over the final 4:50 of the first period and were staring at a three-point disadvantage headed into what was sure to be a spirited halftime talk.

The talk worked.

Alex Wright scored on a jumper to get things started in half two. His backcourt partner Chris Rossow laid one in shortly after for Biola to get back out in front in short order.

After some back-and-forth Biola utilized a five-point run to extend out to an eight-point lead with 15 minutes to play. That breathing room was what the Eagles needed to really settle into their style of play and solidify themselves as the heavy favorites in this one.

Six points was the closest the Mustangs would get to Biola over those final 15 minutes, with the Eagles utilizing a run of 12-2 to hold a 16-point advantage as the game moved into its final stages. During the 12-2 run it was the three-pointer and solid free throw shooting that gave Biola the lift. Rossow went 4-for-4 from the line and Stone and Wright both hit triples to give BU the lift.

Biola would get up by as much as 24 points before a short spurt from the Mustangs at the end of the game would settle things into the 13-point final.

We mentioned Rossow's 4-for-4 effort at the line during that run. Great free throw shooting was on tap all night for BU who went 21-for-23 in a lot of trips to the line. BU was a pristine 14-for-14 from the stripe in their superior second half.

Rossow was 9-for-10 from the stripe and led all Eagles with 20 points in this one. He had seven rebounds, four assists and five steals in an active night.

Biola had three scorers hit double-figures as Wright had 17 and Michael Bagatourian dropped in 10. Whitten Dominguez had the best shooting night for BU, going 3-for-4 to put up seven points.

Both teams had similar turnover numbers, but Biola was creating turnovers all over the place when TMU had the ball. The Eagles had 11 steals on the night, which is Biola's highest single-game total since March 2020.

Maximo Milovich had a solid effort despite being limited to 15 minutes for BU. The Argentinian had six points and six rebounds while shooting 3-for-5. He was just one rebound off the team lead, despite playing less than half the game.

The win keeps Biola unbeaten in the new year. They'll keep non-conference play going with a match at Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday before opening their season at home Saturday against CCAA power Cal Poly Pomona.
