Sea Lions' Defense Too Much

Biola can't break through Point Loma defense with any consistency, falls to PacWest leaders.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola finally suffered its first home loss of the season, with a 71-50 defeat coming at the hands of conference-leading Point Loma on Wednesday night.

The Sea Lions' lockdown defense caused issues for Biola all night long, resulting in multiple shot clock violations and most drives not even beginning until the shot clock had under five seconds on it.

Challenging shot opportunities caused Biola to shoot just 34.5 percent from the field (20-for-58). That would not be nearly enough to get it done against a PLNU side that made 27 of 60 and shot nearly 60 percent in the first half.

The Eagles had major troubles holding onto the ball, which was the real differentiating factor in this one. Point Loma converted 18 Biola turnovers into 22 additional points. Ten of Biola's turnovers came in the second half. A second period that saw Point Loma outscore the Eagles 30-19 to double their first-half lead and put the game out of reach.

Biola made just eight field goals in the second stanza, shooting just 26 percent and only hitting one three-point shot.

The three-pointer was what was actually allowing Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's team to keep the game tight for much of the first half as Alex Wright, Chris Rossow, Michael Bagatourian and Marquise Mosley combined to hit six triples.

The heat from deep allowed Biola to keep pace until as late as 3:20 left in the first, when the game was tied at 31-31. Unfortunately, some defensive lapses and missed free throws and field goals allowed PLNU to close out with the final 10 points of the half, including an easy layup on the final possession of the half by big man Kaden Anderson.

PLNU led 41-31 at the break and never looked back, scoring 11 of the first 13 points of half two to put the game out of reach almost immediately.

The Sea Lions' streaky guard Darnel Robateau led all players with 18 points on the night. He paced the good shooting for PLNU by going 8-for-12 from the floor. Robateau also lead PLNU with eight rebounds.

Bagatourian was Biola's leading scorer, he dropped 14 and came just one rebound short of what would have been his third-straight double-double, bringing in nine boards.

Alex Wright did finish with a double-double, which is his third in the last five games. He had 12 points and 14 rebounds, but he was a little more cold from the floor than he typically is (5-for-13).

Chris Rossow also finished with double-digits, scoring 10 in the losing effort.

The Point Loma defense made it challenging for the Eagles to effectively move the ball, causing BU to finish with just eight assists, the second-lowest total of the 2019-20 season. Biola depends on its ability to create open looks with its creative ball movement. The team has not won a single game this season when it recorded fewer than 10 assists.

The loss drops the Eagles to 12-8 overall and snaps a two-game winning streak. The Eagles are now 8-6 in PacWest Conference contests, while PLNU remains in first place at now 12-1 in conference.

Biola will put this one behind it quickly because the highest-profile home game of the regular season comes to Chase Gym on Saturday night and it's against another really good team in Azusa Pacific (15-3; 10-2 PacWest).
