Biola Blitzes Past Penguins

Eagles use great defense to dominate first half, win by 22 points.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola outscored Dominican by 22 points on Saturday afternoon, winning 67-45 to improve to a perfect 9-0 at home this season. The Eagles are outscoring opponents by an average of 17.6 points-per-game inside of Chase Gymnasium this season.

In the past three days, Biola beat both NDNU and Dominican by a combined 43 points. Today's win was powered by a dominant defensive first half and some excellent ball movement creating open shots all night long.

The Eagles held Dominican to just 12 points in the first 20 minutes, limiting the Penguins to four field goals on 25 attempts (16 percent). Meanwhile, Biola made 12 first-half field goals, including five threes to take a 33-12 lead at the break.

Biola continued to hit threes in the second half and extended the lead to as many as 26 points at the 3:42 mark in the second half. Down the stretch, the Eagles got some contributions from the bench, including a fantastic three-point play by Will Shannon, to put the game away with a final score of 67-45.

The Eagles only hit 39.7 percent of their shots on the night, but that was still 12 percent better than the opponents and a 12-6 advantage in made three-point shots made a big difference in the final.

Biola had 45 rebounds, compared to just 32 from Dominican. It's the third time in the last four games that BU had a double-digit rebounding advantage. Michael Bagatourian led that effort with 12 rebounds. He had his fourth double-double of the season (and second in a row) with 19 points. He added four assists for good measure.

Ball movement was key all night long for BU. The Eagles ended up with 16 assists, compared to just seven from Dominican. It's the Eagles' third-largest advantage in that category this year.

Alex Wright (5), Chris Rossow (6) and Bagatourian led that effort with all three men playing 32 or more minutes on the night. Rossow also had eight rebounds on a night where he set season-bests in rebounds and dimes.

Wright was filling up the stat sheet on Saturday, shooting 6-for-8 to put up 17 points to go will all the assists and six rebounds. Marquise Mosley (12pts, 5-of-8) joined Wright and Bagatourian in double digits.

Solomon Ruddell was having a solid big man night with six rebounds and three blocks, but he was limited to just 15 minutes after exiting with an injury.
The win improves Biola to 12-7 overall and 8-5 in PacWest play and completes the season sweep against Dominican. Biola will look to keep its unblemished home record next week as it hosts Point Loma (14-3, 10-1 PacWest) on Wednesday and Azusa Pacific (15-3, 10-2 PacWest) on Saturday.
