Women's Soccer Shuts Out Conference Champs

A Sarah Yang goal just before the half proves the difference in win at PLNU.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The Eagles traveled south to take on the Point Loma Sea Lions. in a non-conference matchup against their PacWest foe. Sarah Yang put home a goal late in the first half and the Eagles defense played lights out to earn their third-straight shutout 1-0.

Biola's offense got to work early with two quick shots on the goal to pressure the Sea Lions defense. Ella Hiveley kept the pressure up with two shots in the half, while Point Loma only managed two the entire half. Christina Rodriguez made the save on both attempts to keep the shutout.

With the offense pushing for a goal, the Eagles were able to break through when Alyssa Chavez and Colie Martin pulled a nifty passing combo, streaking down the left side to get a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie for Sarah Yang. Yang put the ball into the back of the net to give Biola the 1-0 lead with just 57 seconds left till the half, a lead they would take into the break and set the defending conference champions back on their heels.

With the lead in hand, the Eagles looked to keep Point Loma from notching the equalizer in the second half with stifling defense the majority of the last 45 minutes. Biola took just one shot-on-goal in the second period, but their defense played well to keep Point Loma down. The Sea Lions got off a flurry of late shots, but new keeper Briana Ruelas and the Eagles' defense were able to repel their attacks and secure the shutout victory.

The Eagles next match is another non-conference one at home on Wednesday against PacWest rival Concordia Irvine at 4 p.m.
