Eagles Stick To Script

Biola Women’s Soccer completes its strong finish to the non-conference schedule with another shutout and the Eagles’ first home win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles kept their strong momentum rolling into the start of PacWest play next week with another shutout on Wednesday that resulted in their first home win of the season.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's team has now posted four-straight shutouts after defeating Concordia University Irvine, 1-0. The win lifts the Eagles to 9-3-2 at home in meetings against Concordia and gives the group an even 3-3-1 record in the non-conference portion of their schedule after going 3-0-1 in their last four contests.

BU put on another clinic for what defense can look like with a true team effort in the non-conference matchup with Concordia. The visiting team was prevented from taking any shots on goal in the first half while Biola boxed CUI in around the middle third of the pitch. The midfielders specifically deserved close attention for the way they won the ball and took it the other way before Concordia could create any dangerous runs upfield.

That success in the midfield put Concordia on its heels as Biola attacked the sidelines and forced CUI to concede six first-half corners and nine total for the match.

The home team couldn't find the back of the net in the first half.  But with the way all seven of Biola's forwards maintained constant pressure up top, and with the backline's handling of every Concordia threw their way, it was only a matter of time.

Ironically, it was some of those defenders from the backline who made the most of a good opportunity and created the scoring chance that resulted in BU's goal. Colie Martin recorded her team-leading third of assist of the season in the second minute of the second with her indirect kick that was headed toward the left post by Madyson Brown and put away by a Halie Jamir header.

Martin has now assisted on each of Biola's last three goals, which all turned out to be game-winner coincidently, while Jamir became the first freshman to score for Brunelle's group this year.

Biola made the effort to score a second goal and create a nice cushion. Senior captain Hali Oakes took a particularly nice shot that sent the ball on a line from outside the penalty area almost 20 minutes after Jamir's goal. But CUI keeper Kaelyn Whitcomb made the move to her left to catch in on the fly and keep the score at a one-goal margin.

That just left the Eagles to hold their ground for the duration of the match. Concordia was only able to produce one shot after Whitcomb saved Oakes' try before falling for the third time on the road. Consequently, goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez only needed to make one save to be credited with her third individual clean sheet of the year.

Rodriguez is now one shutout away from taking sole possession of the program record for career clean sheets with 25. The Eagles next opportunity to help her earn No. 25 will be Thursday October 10 at Holy Names.
