Another Win In Oregon

A large contingent of Biola Women’s Soccer fans cheer the Eagles onto a 2-0 win at Concordia Portland.

PORTLAND, Ore.
--- The Concordia Portland Cavaliers were surprised by the opposing contingent in multiple ways during Saturday's match at Hilken Community Stadium. The stands had a strong presence of Biola supporters, led by the notorious Uncle Dan and several families of student-athletes, while the Eagles on the field applied a lot of early pressure in the attack and netted two second-half goals to earn Biola's first victory of the 2019 season.

The Cavaliers, who came into the season ranked No. 22 in the national poll, fall 1-3 on the year. And Biola will take that same 1-3 record back home to Al Barbour Field as it improves to 4-0 in Oregon over the last five years.

The Eagles scored both their goals early in the second half after taking control of the momentum during the first 45 minutes and constantly putting pressure upfield. Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group did a great job to keep the Cavaliers in their defensive third for a large part of the Eagles' possession during the first half while the Concordia commentator remarked several times on the impressive play from centerbacks Madyson Brown and Alyssa Chavez to win their challenges and mark opposing attackers.

Biola's 10-to-2 advantage in total shots over the course of the first half laid the groundwork for the goals that gave the Eagles the lead early in the second period. With just over two minutes elapsed after the start of the half, Colie Martin found an opening down the left flank and delivered a pass for Annmarie Alvarez near the box.

Alvarez looped the ball toward the front of goal and received some help from fellow nursing-major Sarah Yang, who heel-flicked into the open space in the center of the six-yard area. Playing in her home state but about 250 miles away from her hometown, Brynne Anderson stepped up to the ball and had an easy putaway to earn the first goal and first game-winner of her collegiate career.

Martin and Alvarez made things a bit more efficient about seven minutes later, when Martin took it to the far edge of the box all by herself and passed the ball along the goal mouth for Alvarez to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead and repeat the punchin goal off a pass from the left side.

The two-score output is Biola's first multi-goal match of the year and continues an impressive stretch of success for the Eagles when they score two goals or more. Biola is undefeated since Nov. 1, 2014 when scoring two goals or more in a match, good for a 40-0-3 record since that date when the Eagles meet that criteria.

After a good first half in goal and making two saves, Christina Rodriguez remained in the game for the second half and saved four more chances to earn her first clean sheet of the year. None of those saves forced Rodriguez to dive to her left or right, as the Biola defense hardly allowed Concordia any dangerous openings at a goal or any shots with power that had a chance of staying under the crossbar.

The Eagles will have a week to recoup and train at Al Barbour Field for their next match. Biola hosts Cal State San Marcos at Al Barbour Field on September 21.
