Eagles Earn Another Shutout

Head Coach Erin Brunelle’s team posted its second-straight shutout in a 0-0 tie with Cal State San Marcos

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After being shutout each of their previous three trips to Al Barbour Field over the last five years, the Cal State San Marcos Cougars still couldn't find an answer for Biola's defensive front on Saturday night.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group was characterized by steady composure and basically controlled the pace of play for the entire match on their way to a second-straight clean sheet. The Eagles just found themselves a bit unlucky with off-target scoring chances and a few no-calls that kept them out of the net and resulted in their first draw of the season.

Even with a quick glance at the statistics, it was evident that Biola was prepared for the playing style brought by the visiting team. The Eagles held 70 percent of the possession during the first 45 minutes and posted an 11-to-4 advantage in shots during the second half to keep the Cougars on their heels.

When the final whistle sounded, the Eagles had nine more shots than Cal State San Marcos while committing 12 fewer fouls. Midfielder Halie Jamir led the contingent of freshman who made noticeable impacts on the match, playing the final 80 minutes of the match and taking a team-high five shots. Freshman starters Christine Goodman, Madi Reeves and Mason Stansberry all played over 90 minutes in the contest and made a number of key attacking runs down the sidelines that created some of Biola's best scoring chances.

Additionally, forward Ella Hiveley made the most of the first 34 minutes of her collegiate career, chasing down a ball late in the second half that the Eagles had all but abandoned to kick it off a Cougar defender and create a throw-in in the attacking third. And then in overtime, Hiveley took one of Biola's best chances at a goal when Reeves found her in the box for a powerful one-touch shot that sailed high.

Biola's backline was so good at preventing the Cougar forwards from chasing the balls launched upfield from their defensive half that senior keeper Christina Rodriguez was only required to make three saves. Nonetheless, Rodriguez combined very well with her defenders and made several good decisions to come off her line and get her hands on the ball.

Consequently, Rodriguez takes the conference lead with her second clean sheet of the season and moves within one shutout of tying the program record for career shutouts. Rodriguez is up to 23 career clean sheets and holding Cal State San Marcos to zero goals for the second time.

Biola will have another full week to prepare for its next match. The Eagles will travel to San Diego to face Point Loma in a non-conference matchup on September 28 at 2 p.m.
