Running Out Of Gas

No. 13 Azusa Pacific scores in four-straight innings to take the final game of the series from Biola.

AZUSA, Calif. --- After playing 11 hours of baseball in Azusa over the previous three games, Biola Baseball dropped the final game of the four game set after coming up empty in the latter innings.

The Eagles started the game by scoring in each of the first three innings to give the indication that the series finale would be just as back-and-forth as the first. Sophomore Brandon Cody smashed a double and a homerun to right-center over the first two innings to stake Biola to a 3-0 lead. Cody scored the first time on a Joey Magro two-run single in the first that victimized the Cougars for loading the bases with two outs.

Cody's two hits concluded his series with a four-game hitting streak, six RBI's, five runs scored and a team-best 16 total bases. That placed Cody behind RJ Bates for most RBI's in the series, Bates had eight, and tied him with Magro for the most number of hits.

The Eagles tacked on one more when Bates scored on a wild pitch in the third. But the Cougars quickly tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third on a two-run single up the middle. While Biola's scoring tapered off after the third, APU added two more in the fourth and another in the fifth on single to go up by three runs.

Biola was unable to produce another hit after the third inning but still finished the series with 37 runs, 25 more than any other PacWest opponent has scored against the Cougars this season. Head Coach Justin Duarte's group also snapped Azusa Pacific's 10-game winning streak with the win in game one on Saturday and gets to head home to try to push its PacWest record back over .500.

Biola plays its next 12 conference games at Eagles Diamond, where BU is 8-2 this year, over the next three weeks. Up first is a four-game series with Fresno Pacific that starts on April 5 with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12 noon.
