Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Statement

Biola was not itself in the first half, but bounced back to win in half two.

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- It's a good thing basketball games are two halves. The first half tonight was a flat, uninspired half from Biola Men's Basketball, but a halftime pep talk from Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist and captain Trevor Treinen lit a fire under the boys and led to a 60-50 win over Dominican.

The Eagles have now won three of their last four PacWest contests, with the one loss being by just six points. Michael Bagatourian keyed the strong second half, scoring 14 of his team-high 17 in the final 20 minutes of play.

"You want to be emotionally prepared for every game, but every coach knows that is not always going to happen," said Holmquist. "You hope on a night where you are not quite there you can still find a way to win. I think we did that tonight."

Neither team could find any breathing room in the first half, ending the beginning 20 minutes in a 28-28 tie. Biola held the Penguins to 36 percent shooting while shooting 46 percent on their end, but six Biola turnovers and a disparity in rebounding allowed DUC to stay in the game throughout.

"After the first half we all felt like we played pretty poorly," said Bagatourian. "We had no effort. No one was moving or playing any defense. It was a poor half. After halftime we started playing harder. When you play harder it's more fun and you make more shots."

It took a little bit for BU to really get going in the second half. They fell behind by five as DUC made the first two shots of the period, but then brought it back to tied quickly. The game remained within a handful of points until the final five minutes or so, which is when the Eagles finally began to string some positive possessions together.

Biola scored eight straight points between 5:39 and 4:25 to grab its largest lead of the game at 58-47. Two three-pointers from reigning PacWest Conference Freshman of the Week Alex Wright spurred on that run.

Wright would end the game as one of three Eagles to score in double digits. He scored eight of Biola's final 10 points.

The 11-point lead never shrunk to fewer than eight points as both teams played solid defense down the stretch. Only five points total were scored in the final four minutes and 25 seconds of play.

Biola would shoot 46 percent for the game and made seven three-point shots, led by a 4-of-5 shooting effort from Bagatourian beyond the arc. It's the third-straight game with at least seven made threes for Biola.

"We hit our stride at some point in the final 20 minutes and started to play very good basketball," said Holmquist. "We were moving the ball well and getting good shots on offense. We were also playing very good defense, especially down the stretch."

Treinen scored 11 points Wright 10 and Steve Herve had solid minutes with eight points and eight rebounds. Herve also led a fantastic blocking night for the Eagles. He and Alex Talma both had four blocks to post the second-highest number of the season for BU.

The defense keyed in on Cedric Thomas, who came into this game as a top-5 scorer in the conference. Biola was able to limit Dominican's star to just six points on 2-of-11 shooting and caused him to commit four fouls.

The win pushes the Eagles to 15-12 (11-10 PacWest). The Eagles host Academy of Art (10-16, 10-11 PacWest) on Saturday night, which is Biola's Senior Night. The Urban Knights are coming off a 77-62 loss at Azusa Pacific.

It should be a great game with Biola motivated to win on Senior Night and Academy of Art needing to win to claim the last spot in the PacWest Conference tournament. Join us for a pregame celebration in honor of Levi Auble, Christian Carroll, Steve Herve, Alex Talma and Trevor Treinen.
