Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Trevor Hits 1,400 in Senior Night Thriller

Biola fights to the end but cannot overcome slow start to second half in loss on Senior Night.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A big chunk of Biola Men's Basketball's 2018-19 contributors played their final games in Eagles uniforms on Saturday night and boy were the fans in attendance treated to a good one.

The visiting Academy of Art University Urban Knights came away with a win thanks to a big run early in the second half, but late steals, missed free throws and quick three-point buckets made this an enjoyable game all the way down the the final buzzer.

Things were even tenser in Chase Gym because both teams had emotional energy and high stakes to get the win. A win for Academy of Art meant they would clinch the sixth and final spot in next week's PacWest tournament, while Biola wanted to end its season well with a win for its five finishing seniors.

Ultimately, the postseason push carried ART U the little extra bit to their 61-57 road win and playoff berth.

Biola led the game at the half after Alex Talma was doing just about everything under the basket to lift BU early on. The senior New Zealander put up 14 first-half points and had six rebounds to lead Biola in a category it struggled in all night.

The Eagles, a team that rarely gets outrebounded, was on the wrong side of the rebounding numbers 40-23 on this night.

The sound rebounding led to a lot of fast-paced transition offense for the Urban Knights, an area where the Eagles struggled to keep up. Biola was outscored 24-4 in transition.

Biola led 30-26 coming out of the locker room, but the Eagles were outscored 17-4 over the first 11 minutes of play in the second half, putting them behind the eight ball in a major way, trailing by nearly double digits with nine minutes left in the game with a lot of guys in foul trouble.

The Eagles got to work over the next seven minutes when ART U's offense finally began to cool off a bit. A hook shot from Talma with just over two minutes left on the clock made it a two-point game again and had the gym rocking.

After that point Academy of Art's Stefan Milivojevic began to put the team on his back. He made a three and five-straight free throws to score ART U's final eight points and seal things from the Urban Knights.

Biola stayed in the game into the final 10 seconds as Steve Herve stole the ball at half court, passed off to Alex Wright who found Trevor Treinen for a corner three to make it 59-57 with seven seconds left.

But, Milivojevic made both FT on the other end to push it back to a two-possession game and the Eagles came up just short.

Treinen's last two makes of the game were both three-pointers. The second-to-last shot got him to 15 points in the contest and 1,400 points in his career, allowing him to become the Eagles' eighth-leading scorer and eighth man to notch 1,400.

He ended with a team-high 18 points, really helping the Eagles push the issue late in the second half after being held to just three first-half points.

Treinen and Talma (16) were the only Eagles to score in double figures on the night. Talma paired his points with eight rebounds and two steals in a solid final game.

The Eagles forced 18 turnovers on nine steals to score a whopping 21 points off turnovers, but it was still not enough to overcome the snail's paced start to the second half.

The loss brings Biola's season to rest at 15-13 overall and 11-11 in conference. Biola now says goodbye to Treinen, Talma, Steve Herve, Levi Auble and Christian Carroll. Thanks to those guys for great careers and wonderful dedication to Biola.

Catch the Eagles back in Chase Gym when they open the 2019-20 season in November. If all goes well this will be the Eagles' first season of postseason eligibility in the NCAA Division II.
