Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Carroll Makes A Splash At HPU

A big second half from Christian Carroll and the Eagles leads to win.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- All is right in the Biola Basketball world as the Eagles got back in the win column on Saturday by setting down Hawaii Pacific, 65-56, on the road.

Both teams got off to slow starts, combining for just 47 total points in the first half and neither team shooting higher than 34 percent from the floor. Thankfully for Biola, the cold snap turned into a heat wave over the first 10 minutes of the second half, helping it build a significant lead going into the final few minutes.

Biola nearly doubled its first-half point total in the second half, outscoring the hosting Sharks by 10 points, 42-32, to walk away with the first win of its road trip.

Alex Talma did just enough in the first 20 minutes to keep Biola in the game. He was responsible for nine of the team's 23 points, but it came on just 3-of-12 shooting.

After going 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first half, Biola began to heat up from deep and that made a significant difference in the game. A big reason for the success beyond the three-point line - Christian Carroll.

Carroll entered the game with 16 minutes left in the game and the score 32-31 Biola. He made each of his first three shots (including two threes) and helped Biola take a 49-39 lead by the time he was subbed back out at the 10-minute mark.

He came back in for five of the final six minutes and made one more three to help Biola keep HPU at just enough of a distance to be able to hold on for the win. He scored all 11 of his points in his 12 second-half minutes and even added four rebounds and an assist in his best outing of the season.

After Carroll came out with just over a minute to go, it was Alex Wright's turn to make the big impact. The freshman was clutch, going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 62 seconds to push Biola over the top and lock in its seventh PacWest win.

The Eagles had a great day from the line, making 14 of its 18 free throw attempts. Half of Wright's 10 points came from foul shooting. He led the team with five points off FT.

He and Carroll were two of five Biola players to end the game with double-digit scoring. Trevor Treinen led the way with 12. Talma chalked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Levi Auble finished with 10 to have his fourth double-digit game in his last five times out.

The Eagles improve to 11-9 (7-7 PacWest) with the win. The Sharks drop to 5-14 (2-12 PacWest) after the loss.

Next up for Biola is the road trip finale at Hawaii Hilo (9-8, 7-6 PacWest) on Monday night. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. Hawaiian time/9:30 p.m. Pacific time. The Vulcans host Biola coming off their biggest win of the season, at 64-60 defeat of Azusa Pacific on Friday night.
