Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles Aubliterate Vulcans In 2nd

Biola drops 50 second-half points to come back from down as much as 20.

HILO, Hawaii --- While you may have been sound asleep in your bed, listening to the soothing sound of the raindrops battering So. Cal the Biola Men's Basketball team was hard at work on the big island in Hawaii putting together one of the most stunning comebacks in the PacWest this year.

The Eagles led for just four minutes and six seconds throughout the night, but they led when it mattered the most in raking in a 79-77 road win against Hawaii Hilo. It was the Eagles' third game in five nights and they managed to end the trip with a pair of wins.

The big difference tonight was the split shift between the two halves. The Eagles had next to nothing working in the first half, trailing 48-29 at the break after making just 11 shots in the first 20 minutes while Hawaii Hilo made 19 shots, including nine threes. The second period score very closely mirrored that of the first half, but this time in the Eagles' favor, 50-29.

Biola shot 58 percent in the second half, with the biggest different being Levi Auble going 8-of-11 and pouring in 17 points to open up every other shot of the floor. He'd have a team-leading 23 for the game and led a trio of three Eagles (Michael Bagatourian, Alex Wright) who'd score double-digits in the second half alone.

After making half of their three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes, the Vulcans efficiency from deep was cut to about one-quarter of their shots being makes over the final 20 minutes. That made a big difference in the game, as BU managed to match Hilo's number of made threes in the second half, eliminating their greatest advantage from early on.

The comeback was slow and methodical as Biola still trailed by double digits as deep as eight minutes and 10 seconds into the second half. The biggest spur to the Eagles' ability to comeback was a 13-3 run from the 11:50 mark to the 7:12 mark in that second half.

Prior to that stretch, UHH was averaging 2.17 points-per-minute in building their big lead. Over the final 12 minutes of play, Biola held the Vulcans to just 1.3 points-per-minute and just 6-for-15 shooting from the field.

Aside from the scoring uptick, the Eagles showed tremendous discipline in the second half on both ends of the floor. BU turned the ball over just five times and committed just six personal fouls in the second half.

One of those turnovers and one of those fouls came at the scariest part of the game for Biola, though. The Eagles had the ball and a 79-77 lead with just 20 seconds left to play. UHH pressured BU on the inbounds pass, forcing the inbounder to attempt a full-court football pass to Bagatourian who was streaking alone just past the timeline. The ball sailed long, Bags couldn't save it and instead Hawaii Hilo got the ball back with a chance to win the game and about 12 seconds left.

On their inbounds play, Biola committed a foul trying to poke a ball loose. Fortunately for BU, because of its discipline the Vulcans were not in the bonus yet and had to inbound the ball with even less time to find a good shot.

At the end, their shot bounced wide and time expired with Biola securely in hold of perhaps its grittiest win of the season.

Auble, Bagatourian and Wright were joined in double figures by Alex Talma, who had 11 points and eight rebounds. Auble had nine boards to go along with his 23 points, coming up one point shy of what would've been his first double-double of the season in what was his first start of the year.

Biola outrebounded the hosts 37-31, thanks to a 21-13 advantage in that category in the second half.

The win pushes the Eagles to 12-9 (8-7 PacWest) and officially pushes the team past last year's win total with still seven games left to play. Six of those seven games are at home, beginning with their next game which is a Tuesday night (Feb. 12) RED SEA NIGHT against Concordia Irvine (16-7, 12-2 PacWest).

All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear red and the first few hundred will get to eat FREE CHICK-FIL-A sandwiches courtesy Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace.
