Comeback Chances Slip Away

The Eagles had a few chances to get back even with Hope International, but eventually drop Tuesday’s game.

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Tuesday's game with Hope International was a game that was won and lost in the middle innings.

The Eagles scored two runs in the third inning after starting the frame down 5-1 and had their three and four hitters at the plate with a chance to score more. Then they had the Royals on the ropes again with tying run on base and no one out in the sixth.

Unfortunately, Biola could plate anyone in those situations and went scoreless over the final six innings while the Royals added nine more runs. The Eagles drop to 3-2 after the 14-3 loss while Hope International improves to 9-2.

Head Coach Justin Duarte's group had a strong start to the night when the scored a run in the first on two singles and a Jerron Largusa sacrifice fly. Then Larson Kindreich shut the Royals down in the bottom half of the first by striking out the side and stranding two runners. Then Kindreich struck out the first two batters of the next inning to retire five of his first six outs via the K.

But Hope International clipped the freshman lefty in the third with five runs on three hits and two walks to pull ahead of the Eagles.

Kindreich's teammates responded immediately by having the first five hitters in the inning reach base safely. That brought up Ryan Gallegos and Jerron Largusa to the plate with two men aboard. But Henry Martinez wriggled out of the jam by inducing a ground ball and flyout from Gallegos and Largusa, respectively.

The story was very similar in the sixth inning, as Tyler Baca and Joey Magro were both granted free passes to start the inning. This time it was Shaine McNeely who shut the door for HIU, striking out the side against the next three hitters to end the Eagles best scoring chance for the rest of the night.

Biola finished the game with seven hits and four walks while the Royals scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to blow the game open.

The Eagles will head to Hawaii for their next game, facing Hawaii Pacific on Friday for a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. Pacific Time
