Eagles Lose Early Leads

Biola Baseball took 1-0 leads in the first inning of both contests Saturday but dropped two games to Hawaii Pacific

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- Biola Baseball jumped out to 1-0 leads in the first inning of both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific and blasted two homeruns in game two only to drop both half of the twinbill.

The Eagles fall to 3-4 after the two non-conference losses while Hawaii Pacific improves to 13-3.

Head Coach Justin Duarte's group took the early lead in game one with two hits and and throwing error in the top of the first. Ryan Gallegos scored the first of his three runs of the day on an airmailed throw by the catcher with Jerron Largusa breaking for second.

Following that frame, starter Brayden Englert stranded runners on base in the Sharks next two at-bats to hold the lead before surrendering two runs in the second. Despite the fact that Englert received his first loss of the season, Englert truly did pitch his way through his first start against a conference opponent. The freshman righty allowed just two runs over 5.2 innings and neutralized the majority of the 10 hits that HPU collected.

Englert gave up just two walks and induced 10 flyouts during his start, which spanned 91 pitches.

The Sharks added two more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to add insurance while their relievers made things tough of Biola at the plate. The Eagles' best scoring chance came in the ninth when the first two men reached safely. But the Sharks turned a double play on a line-drive against the third batter of the inning to cut the rally short and secured the game by a score of 6-1.

The positive signs from the offense would be more apparent in game two, but good things did still happen for Eagles hitters in game one. The one through five hitters all collected hits in game one while Joey Magro and Largusa reached safely twice in preparation for bigger performances in game two.

Magro and Largusa combined for almost half of their team's 11 hits in game two while five hitters had multi-hit games. RobertAnthony Cruz knocked in Biola's first run with a single in the Eagles' opening at-bats against the Sharks starter before Largusa and RJ Bates both launched solo homeruns in the fourth inning to add to the visitor's lead.

In the meantime between those two scoring innings, Troy Stainbrook kept the Sharks at bay by stranding a total of five runners between the second and third innings. Stainbrook surrendered just one hit and zero runs over five innings but had to be removed from the game after five innings due to pitch count. The Eagles increased their lead to 5-0 by the time Stainbrook exited on a Largusa double and a Magro squeeze bunt. But the Sharks would roar back with five runs in the bottom of the six to tie the game.

HPU scored two runs in the eighth for the second-straight game to take the lead and Christian Miller closed out his first win of the year with a two strikeouts and a lineout. Miller went 3.2 innings for Hawaii Pacific, just as long as the Sharks starter, and struck out seven while allowing just two hits.

The Eagles will have Sunday off before returning to Hans L'Orange Park for another doubleheader against the Sharks on Monday.
