Women's Soccer Celebrates Seniors

Biola Women’s Soccer battled for 110 minutes against Point Loma on Senior Day to earn a 0-0 draw.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Wednesday's final home match of the year for Biola Women's Soccer truly put all the program's values on display.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle honored all 13 of the Eagles' graduating senior before the match, the bench went raucous for every major accomplishment their teammates had on the pitch and Biola gave everything it had on the field for 110 minutes to play even with the back-to-back conference champions.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw with a total of five shots on goal for the match and the visiting Point Loma Sea Lions get to keep their undefeated record in conference play that has spanned two years now. But there were so many shining moments for the Eagles once the team transitioned from the ceremony to the match, and it started with giving injured seniors Devin Gooch and Danielle Strickler the honors of starting on their senior day and kicking the match off.

Thereafter, the Eagles dug-in to slow a potent Point Loma attack that had scored four goals just this past Saturday at Concordia. Biola did an excellent job to keeping striker Julia Glaser out of the attacking zone while also limit her passing options for teammates running upfield during the first half. Consequently, Point Loma did not get its first shot on goal until the 31st minute and forced Christina Rodriguez to make just four saves during the first 90 minutes of the match.

But Biola's performance certainly got more spectacular and impressive as play progressed in the second half. Senior centerbacks Madyson Brown and Alyssa Chavez both made do-or-die sliding tackles around the penalty area to neutralize the Sea Lions' runs upfield. And Christina Rodriguez made an incredible point-blank save in the 71st minute against Glaser from 10 yards out that she punched away with her right hand to deny the PacWest's leading goal-scorer another strike.

The Eagles came close to golden goals on several occasions in overtime, starting with a shot from outside the box by Sarah Jeffries that tested goalkeeper Emma Hinson to make a save for the first time in the 91st minute. Halie Jamir was unfortunately called for offside a few minutes later to stop a good opportunity and Madyson Brown also produced a shot on goal herself in the second overtime for Biola's final shot on target.

Brown finished the match with a game-high four shots and is now in position to become Biola Soccer's all-time leader for men and women in minutes played. With 110 minutes on Wednesday, Brown has now played 6,884 minutes in a Biola uniform, bringing her within 74 minutes of David Shelton's record for Biola Men's Soccer set from 2008 to 2011. Brown would also pass Shelton for most matches started in Biola history in Fresno on Saturday if she is in the starting XI.

Also to be remembered is Christina Rodriguez' Biola Soccer record for career shutouts, which moved to 29 on Wednesday. Another clean sheet against Fresno Pacific might give Rodriguez the opportunity to become the first Eagle to reach 30 career shutouts.

The Eagles will face the Sunbirds at 5 p.m. Saturday.
