Golden Finish to Regular Season

Biola Women’s Soccer scores three unanswered goals at Fresno Pacific to conclude the regular season with a road win.

FRESNO, Calif. --- The final score was not what Biola Women's Soccer was used to in its victories this season. But the way the Eagles worked back from an early two-goal deficit to defeat Fresno Pacific in overtime was yet another example of the hard work and grit that defines the program.

All three of Biola's goals were assisted by seniors, and Paula-Marie Labate might have done the most impressive work of the night to hold onto the ball in the penalty area before finding Halie Jamir for the game-winner. As a result, the Eagles earned their first win in Fresno since 2004 while finishing the regular season with a record of 11-5-2, 8-2-1 PacWest.

The match started and finished with two new Biola Soccer records that involved centerback Madyson Brown. After Brown started and played all 97 minutes on Saturday, she became the all-time leader in career starts (77) and minutes played (6,981) among all men and women who have put on a Biola Soccer uniform. Men's Soccer alumni Cody Shelton (2008-11) previously held both marks that Brown just re-set.

After going down 2-0, Biola went back to its fundamental scoring method to get a goal back just seven minutes later. Left back Colie Martin raced down the sideline and sent a cross into the box for freshman Christine Goodman to run onto and put away in the lower left netting. Goodman's goal came on her birthday and was the second score of her freshman season.

The rest of the first half saw a lot of back and forth and some dangerous chances until play settled in the final 10 minutes of the period. But Biola was the team that adjusted best at halftime and began to dictate the pace of play in the second half.

It seemed all of Biola's forward had good chances to deliver an equalizer at some point early in the second period. Sandy Hawryla barely missed wide left. Sarah Jeffries rattled the crossbar with a rocket shot from 30 yards out and Madi deMetropolis and Sarah Yang both took successive shots on goal that forced the Fresno Pacific keeper to make saves.

But it was the senior captain Hali Oakes who evened the match at 1-1 with a goal after a Jeffries cross in the 56th minute. Oakes stayed with the play after a muffed clearance from an FPU defender and finally got one of the blasts she's been delivering all year to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Christina Rodriguez and the backline then did a great job to stand their ground against the Sunbirds' push to end regulation time. Rodriguez made a total of seven saves between the second half and overtime and made a number of good plays throughout the night to deny any more offense for the home team.

Then Labate nearly ended the match without extra time as she was pushed off the ball without a foul being called in the 89th minute.

But the forward and her teammates just kept pressing until they found their golden goal. Labate took another shot in the 95th minute that was saved by a defender on the goal line before making the selfless play of finding her open teammate for the game-winner after threading through the penalty area.

That game-winner was scored by the aforementioned Jamir, who came through in the clutch once again to score her third game-winner and fourth goal overall in her freshman season. Jamir finishes the season in a tie with Katelyn Penner and Sarah Yang for most goals on the team.

The win gives Biola a winning road record in 2019 at 5-4 and means that this group of 13 seniors never lost a match when their team scored two goals or more. Biola Women's Soccer is 46-0-3 since November 1, 2014 when it scores two or more goals and the Eagles were 6-0 when they reached that marker this season.
