Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big Night By Bagatourian

Biola's freshman from Irvine makes his presence known in loss to PLNU.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball continues to hang in there with some of the top teams in the PacWest Conference, despite being down to a squad of just seven guys after injuries.

Tonight's installment in the string of high-effort outings was a 79-67 loss to the visiting Point Loma Sea Lions. That final score by no means tells the entire story though as Biola scored an incredible 42 second-half points and managed to bring what was a 20-point game at halftime all the way back to within two at one point.

Biola went into halftime trailing 45-25 thanks in large part to eight made three-point shots and an overall shooting percentage of 58 percent from their opponents. That was also counteracted by the Eagles shooting 31 percent and making just one three. The Sea Lions' defense also held BU to zero points over the final 3:34 in the half.

But whatever Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist and his staff pointed out to the team certainly seemed to rejuvenate them coming out of that 15-minute break.

The Eagles scored 27 of the first 36 points in the second half in order to whittle that lead all the way down to just two at 54-52. That stretch was a complete team effort as four Biola players had five or more points, led by nine from Alex Talma.

Rebounding was critical as the Eagles grabbed eight boards and PLNU just two from the start of the second half until the game was made a two-point affair. The Sea Lions also started showing some nerves with six turnovers in that stretch. Biola had none.

Unfortunately for BU the Christian Carroll putback to make it 54-52 was as close as it would get in the second half as PLNU outscored the Eagles by 10 over the remaining 10 minutes and change and managed their eighth consecutive road victory. The Sea Lions are the hottest team in the conference with wins in 10 of their last 11 and now 20 total victories on the season.

Michael Bagatourian ended up as the game's leading scorer with a career-high 24 points. He also set new career marks for field goals made (10), field goals attempted (20) and steals (3).

The Eagles ended the night with seven steals and limited themselves to just seven total turnovers, while forcing PLNU to cough it up 14 times.

The home team shot 57 percent in the second half and outscored Point Loma, 42-34. The Eagles also did a very nice job of making the adjustments necessary to hold PLNU to just six points off threes in the final 20 minutes.

Talma had 16 points and Shannon, Jr. ended with 10 to also get in double-digits for BU. No Eagle had double-digit rebounds as Biola lost the battle of the boards 38-26.

The loss drops your Eagles to 11-15 on the season and 5-13 in PacWest Conference competitions. The Sea Lions are 20-7 with a glistening 14-4 conference mark. They've already clinched a place in the PacWest Conference Tournament held at the CBU Events Center at the beginning of March.

Biola has two more games left in its season, including a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Chaminade (14-9, 9-7 PWC) this Saturday night. Join us at Chase Gym or follow along via our live stream at portal.stretchinternet.com/biola.
