Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Concordia Takes Away A Win

Biola turns the ball over 19 times as CUI runs away in second half.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The first 20 minutes of Saturday's game between Biola and Concordia University Irvine were looking just like the rivalry of old as the two teams traded blows until they went into the halftime break in a tight two-point game. However, turnovers, tired legs and multiple injuries held Biola back in half two and the visitors managed a 75-61 victory.

Concordia shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half and outscored Biola 42-26 to take control of the game. They turned a two-point deficit into a nine-point advantage within the first seven minutes of the second half and then cruised for pretty much the rest of the game.

Biola managed to get the game back to as close as six in the final minutes, but a pair of BU turnovers and points on three straight possessions allowed CUI to extend the lead again rather quickly. Once they got the lead to double digits again at the 1:50 mark there was not much the shorthanded Eagles could do from there.

The glaring difference on the stat sheet tonight was the turnover margin. Biola gave the ball up 19 times, while the opponents only turned it over five times. Those mistakes allowed CUI to cash in 28 points off turnovers. Biola only had two.

A positive sign for the Eagles was the play of some key bench players and the rebounding margin. Biola suffered a tough loss to Azusa Pacific last week where they trailed in rebounds by double digits. Tonight, though, even in the losing effort BU managed to bring in 36 boards to CUI's 28.

Zach Roetcisoender made a noticeable impression on the game as he played 14 minutes, nine more than he's had in any other PacWest game, and managed four assists to just one turnover. He didn't have any points, but he was a big reason for what offense Biola did mange.

Biola also had its best free-throw shooting game of the season as they went 12-of-15 from the line for 80 percent. Concordia was just 29 percent from the stripe, which was another advantage for BU. Without the turnovers, it would've clearly been a much closer finish.

Four Biola players hit double-digits in the points column, including Christian Carroll's second such occurrence of the season (11). The effort was paced by Trevor Treinen's 15, while Michael Bagatourian had 14 and Isaiah Jones 13. Alex Talma was ferocious on the glass, bringing in a game-high 11 rebounds.

The result drops Biola to 6-11 (0-9 PacWest), while Concordia improves to 11-6 (5-4 PacWest). Biola has a week off before they return to action at home next Saturday against Hawaii Pacific (9-6, 4-3 PacWest) at 7:30 p.m. That game will be HPU's fourth in a span of seven days.
