Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sharks Get Last Bite

Biola drops another close one after an impressive effort.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Another night, another stomach-churning battle between Biola Men's Basketball and their opponents inside of Chase Gymnasium. The Eagles and Hawaii Pacific battled a full 40 minutes (and nearly extra time) before the visiting Sharks ended up with a 64-62 victory. The Eagles have near-wins against both of the current PacWest leaders and now another one against the team that won last year's championship.

The two teams traded buckets early on before a 10-0 Hawaii Pacific run helped the Sharks take an eight-point lead just over 10 minutes into the ballgame. At that point HPU was shooting up around 60 percent and looking every bit like the 2016-17 PacWest Conference championship team.

That didn't last too much longer though as a 12-2 run from the Eagles brought the game back to level by the four-minute mark in the first half, and from that point forward Biola had full control of the contest for most of the remainder of the game.

The Eagles stormed out of the gates after halftime and built their lead up to 14 points through the first 11 minutes of the second. During that same stretch of time the Biola defense held HPU to just 12 points, almost all coming from Niksha Federico.

Unfortunately for the home team Biola went from 9:03 - 5:30 without scoring any points and the game was brought back even at 53-53. Trevor Treinen was the one to break the cold snap with a pair of free throws to make it 55-53 and then it was a race to the finish over the final five minutes.

Biola last held a lead a 62-60 with just over a minute to play. That mark was almost extended, but Isaiah Jones had a breakaway layup disrupted in a play that looked a lot like goaltending with just 26 ticks on the clock.

Instead of a bucket for BU the ball went the other way where HPU eventually managed to tie it up on the merit of two free throws made with six seconds left.

With a 62-62 score and a chance for a game-winning bucket Biola failed to inbound the ball within the allotted five seconds and it was instead Hawaii Pacific's ball right under their own basket with six seconds to play.

The Sharks scored in just about a second to claim the 64-62 lead, and then Biola managed to get a good look from about 4-5 feet behind the three-point line as time expired, but it was not meant to be as it bounced off the front iron.

The last-possession victory is another in a series of well-fought, but unfortunate finishes during this basketball season.

Biola led for almost the entire game thanks to a slim rebounding advantage (35-31) and a more effective and selective three-point shot. In the end though it was the difference in other categories, like bench scoring (27-0), second-chance points (11-6) and fastbreak points (14-4) that gave a slight advantage to HPU and helped in their big "fourth quarter" comeback.

Treinen ended up as the game's leading scorer with 21 points on 60 percent shooting. Alex Talma and Isaiah Jones also had a huge impact. Talma picked up his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jones had 11 rebounds to add to the effort.

Biola also did well at limiting Federico to only 14 points and 11 rebounds on less than 30 percent shooting. The lanky guard came into the night averaging 23 and 11 to lead the conference in both categories.

The Eagles fall to 6-12 (0-10 PacWest) following the loss. Hawaii Pacific bumped back up to .500 in conference play and is now 10-8 (5-5 PacWest). Biola heads on the road for three straight as they take their NorCal road trip over the next week and a half. The first contest is at Holy Names this Thursday night.
