Eagles Smash Their Way To GSAC Tournament

Biola finishes the season with a 22-9 record at home.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Thursday marked the third-straight time, and the sixth time in the past month, that the No. 24 Biola Eagles won a game in which they scored at least 11 runs. Senior Sam Thorne hit two homeruns in his final game at Eagles Diamond and Biola pulled ahead of the Bethesda Flames with two runs in the eighth to earn its 35th victory of the season.

"I've been at this field for five years now and have made a lot of good memories during the four seasons I've been in uniform," said Thorne. "It's cool to have my last hit here be a homerun and have it come while I'm on a special team that is confident about the GSAC tournament this weekend."

The super-utility players was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI's in the Eagles' winning effort. After Bethesda took a 1-0 lead to start the game, Thorne took the lead right back with a two-run shot against starter Ryan Olley. The home team used nine hits and four runs to push Olley out of the game after just 3.2 innings.

Biola's other three-hit man, River Fawley, made a big contribution of his own in the sixth. With the game tied at five, Fawley hit his first homerun of the season to give the Eagles a 7-5 lead and watched the advantage increase to three when Ricky Perez hit a double three batters later.

Like Thorne, Fawley paired three RBI's with his three base hits on the way to becoming the 14th individual hitter to leave the yard this season for Biola.

Joey Magro hit two more doubles on Thursday to push his total for the season to 14. And Andrew Frank made great use of first start in center field by reaching safely three times and delivering a sacrifice fly.

Seven pitchers, including the weekend rotation of Jimmy Gallarda, Wyatt Haccou and Micah Beyer, appeared in the game for Biola as they tuned up for the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament. Haccou and Gallarada threw scoreless frames while Micah Beyer allowed a single hit in the form of a solo homerun to Flames outfielder Kevin Maxey.

Closer Daniel Jang entered the game in the eighth inning when the game was knotted 9-9. He finished off the last two frames on an impressive 14 pitches and earned his first win of the year for his efforts. Jang will enter the GSAC tournament with 11 saves and an ERA of 1.29 in 28 innings pitched.

The GSAC tournament will be hosted by the Menlo Oaks from May 7 through May 10. No. 2 seed Biola will face off against the No. 3 seed Vanguard Lions at 12 noon on Sunday at Cañada College.
