LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis finished off its final Golden State Athletic Conference regular season match at the Biola Tennis Center on Friday. The Eagles competed against No. 7 Arizona Christian and came up just short in a match that ran nearly five hours.
Â
The Eagles gave the Firestorm, who's undefeated in conference play this year, absolutely all they could handle in a 6-3 loss on Senior Day.
Â
It was the final home match for Biola's seniors and the second-to-last match of the regular season. The Eagles conclude regular season play at Concordia-Irvine next week.
Â
The match began with doubles, where ACU staked a 2-1 advantage for itself.
Luke Mountain and
Philip Westwood combined for the 8-5 victory in the No. 2 spot to keep the Eagles right in the thick of the match.
Â
The No. 1 doubles matchup was quite the battle as the two sets of men battled back in forth in a match that ended separated by just two games. It was the second loss in a row for
Lucas Lee and
Derek James, who have tied with Westwood and Mountain this season for the most wins by any one doubles pairing.
Â
Singles were just as tight as Biola kept the pressure on one of the top teams in the country and pressed hard for a chance to knock them off the pedestal of undefeated conference play.
Â
Biola got wins from
Derek James (6-3; 6-2), who was playing No. 2 singles for the first time in his collegiate career, and Westwood (3-6; 6-2; 6-4), who was playing No. 3. It was James' 13
th singles win of the season and Westwood's 10
th. They are two of three Eagles with double-digit victories (
David Garcia – 11).
Â
ACU clinched the match by winning three straight-set matches at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6, but
Joe Turnquist kept things interesting by taking his match into a super tiebreaker before losing at No. 5.
Â
Biola becomes 8-12 (2-6 GSAC) while Arizona Christian improves to 12-11 (6-0 GSAC). The Eagles travel to Irvine for their match at CUI next Saturday and then complete their season by competing at the GSAC Tournament at Indian Wells April 18-20.
