Exciting Game 1 Comeback Leads To Split

Biola and Hope International split games on Thursday, earning Biola a 3-1 season series win.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola Softball came into Thursday afternoon hungry for a season sweep of Hope International. The Eagles got a 4-3 come-from-behind win in game one to get halfway there, but then suffered at 14-0 loss in the nightcap.

It was a chilly day at Fullerton College and both teams' bats were as cold as the weather in the first game. The two teams combined for just nine total hits in an opener that was dominated by strong pitching and defense.

The Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead immediately as they managed a first inning run off Biola's starter, Paula Damas.

Damas would settle in after the tricky first inning and put up a string of zeroes until the Eagles managed to score in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game. A sacrifice bunt and Andi Hormel steal of third base would setup the RBI opportunity for Areana Ramos, who tied the game with a single.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, who were struggling to scratch much together off HIU starter, Tori Franks, Hope International answered back immediately in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 3-1 lead.

Anjie Amezquita and Kimmy Triolo reached back-to-back to lead off the Biola half of the sixth inning and start a rally that would ultimately lead to another Biola run.

It was tough luck for BU later in that inning as the team saw a bases loaded, one out situation fall by the wayside as a play at the plate nailed the runner trying to score on a sacrifice fly. That defensive play sent the game to the bottom of the sixth with HIU clinging to its 3-2 lead.

Kaile Chavez shut the Royals down in their half of the sixth inning and sent the game to its final frame with Biola looking to tie the game or pull ahead.

Ramos reached on a walk as the first batter of the inning, which started a rally that would ultimately end up with the bases loaded and two outs as Andi Hormel stepped into the box. Hormel came up with a two-run single to center field, which put Biola in the diver's seat for the first time in the game.

Terri Van Dagens threw a scoreless seventh inning to earn the first save of her career and help the Eagles secure a season series victory over the Royals.

Game two was a bit of a letdown as the Royals' bats began to heat up and they scored 14 runs in the first three innings and ended up winning by way of the run rule in five innings.

Following a second-straight Golden State Athletic Conference series split Biola moves to 21-18-2 (8-12 GSAC). Hope International becomes 25-15 (11-13 GSAC).

Biola has two more conference series left on their regular season schedule. They head up to Northern California at the end of next week to battle for a spot in the GSAC Tournament. They face Menlo for two on Friday and William Jessup for two on Saturday. Biola split with both teams earlier this year.
