Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State San Marcos struck early to spoil game two of the NCAA Division II West Super Regionals for Biola. The home team bounced back from its 7-1 loss yesterday with a 10-2 win on Friday to force the if-necessary winner-take-all game three.
A bright spot for Biola was effective relief pitching from
Lillianna Garcia. She threw six complete innings in relief to steady the ship for Biola and allow Head Coach
Kristin Halte's team to gather some momentum for the third game.
CSUSM scored four in the first and three in the second inning to set the tone early for this one, making the Biola fans grateful to already have a win in their back pocket. The Cougars scratched across three more over the sixth and seventh while piling on an impressive 16 hits in the ballgame.
One of those 16 was a big 3-run homerun in the second inning, but aside from that it was a lot of seeing eye singles and lazy pops that just found the right spots in the infield and shallow outfield.
Biola had a hard time doing much on offense against the CSUSM starter, Jordan Hill. Hill threw five innings and gave up only three hits to the Biola lineup. The Eagles had a bit more success against the Cougars' bullpen, managing their pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game going and avoid a run-rule loss.
Alexa Medley Sheard had the big hit of that inning, using a triple down the left-field line to score
Jackie Ibarra. She'd later touch home plate via a sacrifice fly from Garcia.
Biola would finish the contest with five hits total, powered by two from Ibarra and two from Medley Sheard.
The winner-take-all battle is set for 1:45 p.m. at CSUSM Softball Field in San Marcos. A trip to the NCAA Division II Softball Finals in Chattanooga, Tennessee is on the line. Biola won the coin flip and will again be home team.
