Biola Knocks Oaks Back To Earth

Biola wins its sixth-consecutive conference series with a doubleheader sweep.

Joey Magro hit his first homerun of the year in Biola's 7-4 win.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHERTON, Calif. --- RV Biola has become accustomed to winning on a regular basis since it left the month of February behind, and it continued that trend on Thursday with two momentous wins against No. 9 Menlo. The Eagles took their sixth-consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference series with 7-4 and 11-1 wins propelled by top-notch pitching and a relentless offense.

"The team had great energy and focus throughout the day against one of the better teams in the nation," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Today shows how we have grown as a group on these doubleheader days. It started on the mound with Jimmy Gallarda and Micah Beyer, guys like Daniel Rasmussen made diving catches to lead a solid defense and the lineup executed really well at the plate."

The two wins mean that Biola has not lost back-to-back games or two of three in over seven weeks. At 29-14, the Eagles have the most wins of any GSAC team and jump into a tie for second place in the conference standings with a 15-9 mark. But the results also hand Menlo its sixth and seventh losses in April and leave the Oaks' record at 28-14 (14-9 GSAC).

The Oaks' 9-0 win on Wednesday underscored that no Thursday lead was safe and they pressed Biola for the entirety of the nine-inning game one. After starter Jimmy Gallarda threw three shutout innings to begin the contest, the Eagles' hitters were able to settle in during the fourth inning as they saw righty Brian Ransom for a second time.

Following singles from Jeremy Barth and Jonas Wellan, Jerron Largusa made solid contact for a two-run double that gave Biola its first lead of the game.

Largusa got three hits on Thursday and knocked in three runs to give him a team-high 28 RBI on the year.

Menlo responded for one in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles never trailed at any point Thursday. Biola scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 5-1 headed to the bottom of that sixth frame.

As it turns out five runs would be all Gallarda (8-2) needed in his eight innings of work. Menlo scored four (three earned) against the senior righty, but was unable to get the big inning they needed with the four hits and one walk Gallarda surrendered. This is the second time in a week that Gallarda has gone eight innings in a start and he has now thrown seven innings or more in 11-straight appearances.

"Jimmy really stepped up and set an example for the rest of the team against a lineup that has been able to gets hits against him in the past," said senior Rawley Hughes, who caught both games of the doubleheader. "I think the way he grinded showed us Menlo is not unstoppable, even though they are a good team."

Sophomore infielder Joey Magro continued his sensational year at the plate by hitting his first homerun in the ninth inning to put the game away. Magro's two-run shot made the score 7-4 and gave closer Daniel Jang all the breathing room he needed to record his ninth save of the year.

The half hour break did not do anything to cool the Eagles down. In fact there was a more crooked number for Biola in the capper of the doubleheader as starter Micah Beyer absolutely mowed through the opposing lineup in his complete game victory.

After scoring one in the first inning on an error, Biola went on to score 10 additional runs without an answer from the home team. The aforementioned Barth was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks, while Hughes knocked in two on a single and double.

"Hitting got contagious for us today because everyone wanted to hit the ball hard and come up clutch like the guy before him," said Hughes. "Everybody was expecting to contribute today and that made for an excited dugout as we proved what kind of team we are against a quality opponent."

Trey Holly stole home in the third and got an RBI groundout in the sixth when the Eagles put the game out of reach with four runs. A 4-0 lead after four became an 11-0 blowout headed into the bottom of the seventh as Beyer (6-4) continued to dazzle against the team with the most home runs in the NAIA.

The Eagles' junior right-handed pitcher struck out at least one batter in every inning and reached a new career-high in strikeouts with 12. He allowed a single unearned run in the final frame and held Oaks' bash-brothers Julian Jarrard and Jordan Getzelman to a combined 1-for-5 line with three strikeouts.

With the final nine games of its schedule being played at Eagles Diamond, Biola finishes with an impressive road record of 13-7.

Their next game will be this coming Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. against the Bethesda Flames.
