LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis caught a glimpse of future PacWest Conference competition on Wednesday afternoon as it hosted the Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo for a duel match.
Â
The Eagles won two singles matches, but lost the other seven matchups in its first loss since March 18.
Â
"Hawaii Hilo is a very good team and I give them a lot of credit for playing hard today," said Head Coach
David Goodman. "Court one doubles really played well and had their chances to take the match, but we weren't able to convert when we needed to."
Â
The final score line doesn't tell the whole tale as the Eagles were competitive in most of the matches up and down the lineup. The closest competition of the day was at No. 1 doubles where
Derek James and
Lucas Lee played a doubles pairing that's got double-digit wins this season and came up just short at 7-9.
Â
James rebounded to earn a win in singles at the No. 3 position. He gritted out a 7-5 win in set one before holding the upper hand throughout in set two and winning 6-4.
Â
He and
David Garcia were responsible for both of the match wins for the Eagles on the sweltering afternoon in La Mirada.
Garcia picked up his ninth win of the season by picking up a straight-set win at No. 6 singles. He came from behind to win the first set 6-4 and then wrapped up the match with a 6-4 win in set two. He had to knuckle down in the second set and fend off a late game point from his opponent to get the victory.
Â
Biola drops to 8-9 on the season with Wednesday's loss. The Vulcans are also 8-9 on the year.
Â
"We fought hard, but unfortunately we were unable to close those gaps. We learned a valuable lesson about how important it is to start strong and finish strong today," said Goodman.
Â
The Eagles' next match is on the road this weekend up at Westmont.
