LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis is rolling. The Eagles have won three matches in a row and six of their last seven to improve to 8-8 on the season.
Â
The team's 9-0 win over Pacific Lutheran on Tuesday afternoon continued a stretch of three wins where Head Coach
David Goodman's team has a 26-1 advantage over its opponents.
Â
The match began with doubles. Biola earned easy victories at No. 2 and No. 3, but it was a battle for the ages at the top pairing.
Lucas Lee and
Derek James went back-and-forth with their opponent repeatedly before breaking serve at seven and winning 9-7. Their tight victory allowed the Eagles to eventually secure the unblemished match win.
Â
The only other battle with that much tension came at No. 6 singles.
Michael Vartuli won his first set 6-1, dropped the second 6-3 and then dug in to beat his opponent in a breaker. After a physically exhausting first two sets the third-year Eagle found a way to capture a 10-6 breaker win with the support of his teammates as he was the final match playing on this day.
Vartuli improved to 2-0 in singles play with the win. Lee,
Philip Westwood, James,
Joe Turnquist and
David Garcia won the other five singles matchs in straight sets. James, Turnquist and Garcia each found a way to hold their opponents without a single game in one of their sets.
Â
The win moves men's tennis back to .500 for the first time since Valentine's Day. The Eagles host Hawaii-Hilo at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday before getting back into Golden State Athletic Conference play at Westmont on Saturday.
