LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Tennis got back to it on Wednesday on a bright, sunny day in La Mirada as it hosted PacWest Conference member and perennially ranked opponent BYU-Hawaii.
The Seasiders earned wins in both matches, claiming a 9-0 victory over the Biola women and beating the Biola men 5-2. The men's match ended early because both coaches agreed before the match that they would stop play once one team clinched with five match wins.
Biola's men held a 2-1 advantage in the match after doubles, once again showing an increased strength in this area. The toughest match of doubles play was at No. 2 where
Philip Westwood and Lucas Mountain had to outlast their opponents in a tight super breaker, 7-5, in order to win the match 9-8.
Derek James and
Lucas Lee earned the other match win for the Eagles with a 9-7 victory at No. 1.
When it came to singles only four of the six matches were finished, which was just enough for BYUH to go 4-0 and clinch the match. The two unfinished matches were in the middle of a third set with Biola leading one and the Seasiders leading the other.
The men playing at No. 1 singles also played three sets as
Lucas Lee pushed his opponent to the brink before falling short.
The women's match was decided in all straight-set singles matches and decisive wins at doubles for BYUH. It was a great chance to gain valuable experience for Head Coach
David Goodman's team as they faced the No. 2 team in NCAA Division II.
Men's Tennis falls to 2-6 and the women fall to 2-7. The Eagles get back to GSAC play this weekend as they travel to Arizona Christian for a pair of Saturday matches.
