Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles ran into a pitcher whose slider and fastball were working and found it hard to produce runs on Tuesday. Three early runs from the Flames against starter
Gabe Ihrig stood up for the 4-1 win and dropped the Eagles to 10-8.
The man of the ball game was Bethesda starter Daniel Arellano, who survived six free passes over seven innings to allow just one run. Arellano stranded the bases-loaded twice during the Eagles' ups: once in the fifth, when Biola got its first hit, and again in the sixth.
By that time, the Flames had already scored three runs on a bases-loaded walk in the second and two-run double from catcher Raul Abundis in the third. Ihrig had come into the game with 11 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two starts. But he saw his pitch count climb above 60 and allowed eight men to reach base safely over his three innings in the loss.
The middle frames were largely quiet thanks to the great relief work contributed by
Buddy Brouwer. The senior lefty pitched four scoreless frames while surrounding only one base knock in 39 pitches. He did not allow a run, got seven ground balls for outs and retired the last 10 Flames batters he saw in order.
He and
Jake Battaglia would combine to retired 15 hitters consecutively in a string that would extend to the top of the ninth inning.
The Eagles would get to Arellano for their only run in the seventh, using a
Chris Palmer walk and a
River Fawley double to get on the scoreboard. Palmer had three walks on the afternoon with
Joey Magro also reaching base three times.
Arellano would bounce back to get out the inning without further damage and would be followed by reliever DJ Gunderson, who retired all six Eagles he saw for his second save of the season.
The Eagles will attempt to bounce back in their next game on Friday when
Jimmy Gallarda takes the hill. Biola travels north to Rocklin to face William Jessup with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
