Eagles Nab No. 2 Seed In GSAC Tournament

Biola finishes 13-3 in conference and receives a bye into the tournament semifinals.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No. 17 Biola imposed its will on defense and got the offense to start humming in the third quarter on Tuesday to defeat the San Diego Christian Hawks 74-47. Joclyn Kirton led the Eagles with 20 points and Khadidja Diakite was a sparkplug with 10 points and 10 rebounds as Biola finished its Golden State Athletic Conference schedule with a 13-3 record.

The win, along with the 40-43 loss by the No. 6 Westmont Warriors against No. 3 Vanguard, awards Biola the coveted No. 2 Seed in the GSAC Tournament and a bye into the semifinals.

The Eagles dominated three statistical categories in their 22nd win of the season. 11 steals resulted in 17 points off of turnovers compared to the Hawks' one. And Biola dominated the paint with 14 more rebounds than San Diego Christian to go along with a plus-28 margin for points in the paint.

"Although our first half was not the strongest half we had, we were able to go on a long run there in the third quarter and settle into playing our game," said Kirton. "We wanted to play our tempo and not let the Hawks dictate our play. That allowed us to be patient to see what was open and take shots when they were there.

18 of the Eagles' points on layups came during their 27-point third quarter as their lead ballooned from six at the half to 25 headed into the final period. Biola constricted the Hawks to just twp makes in 15 attempts from the field and eight points in the third while Kirton contributed eight by herself over that same span.

Sara Dougan and Diakite also had good third quarters with six points each on 1.000 percent shooting.

The Eagles outscored the visiting team in every quarter on Tuesday and had five double-digit scorers. Dougan stuffed stat categories with eight boards, three assists, two steals and two blocks. And the ever-dependable Annie Park and DeMoria White still carried their fair share of the scoring burden with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

Replacement Shayleen Toehe went 6-for-6 from the line was the only Hawk to get to double figures with 11 points.

Coming into the season the Eagles' coaching staff set its sights on just breaking into the top-three in the GSAC table after Biola was projected to finish fourth in the conference preview. Even in spite of the final GSAC games that will wrap up this Saturday, Biola will finish two games clear of fourth-place No. 21 The Master's and take second after winning the record tiebreaker with Westmont.

The tiebreaker was based on the teams' records against conference champion Vanguard since Westmont has the chance to finish with an identical 13-3 record if the Warriors win Saturday.

"Getting the second seed is really exciting for us because we know that we're still a good team even though we're missing three vital players because of injury," said Kirton. "We've gone through so many obstacles this season, but we made it this far by prioritizing the team's goals as a unit. To know we've done all we can to be selected for the National Tournament just makes us even more motivated to go far at Nationals."
