LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis burst the bubble on Tuesday afternoon as it snapped a four-match losing streak with a 6-3 victory over Chapman University.
Â
Three of those four losses were 5-4 heartbreakers, so it made it all the more sweet to finally walk away with a victory, especially one that had a little breathing room.
Â
"It was nice to get back in the win column today. We have had a lot of close matches and come up short, so it's a much-needed win," said Head Coach
David Goodman. "I have been impressed at how well we have done with doubles so far, but we have not even come close to our potential in that area."
Â
Biol took two of the three doubles matches for the second match in a row. Phil Westwood and
Milos Zoric picked up an 8-4 win at doubles and
Derek James and
David Garcia won 8-6 at No. 3. That win at No. 3 was critical to the Eagles' ability to win the match.
Â
Even though they lost
Lucas Lee and
Joe Turnquist fought hard at No. 1 and came up just short in a match that went to a super tiebreaker. It was the second day in a row that the Eagles' No. 1 doubles pairing played into a breaker. It explains why Lee showed up to the basketball game later on Tuesday night with ice taped all over his body.
Â
After getting out to the 2-1 advantage the team carried that momentum into the singles play and earned victories in five of the first six singles sets too. The men would ultimately go on to win four of those six matchups and most of them in very convincing fashion.
Â
The
Derek James train just kept cruising down the tracks on Tuesday as the freshman improved to 6-0 in singles matches for his collegiate career. He defeated his opponent 6-1; 6-0 in straight sets at No. 3.
Â
Lee, Westwood and Zoric also got wins for Biola at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 spots. The only singles match of the day that required more than two sets went the way of the Panthers as Turnquist suffered a narrow defeat at No. 4.
Â
"Lucas, Derek and Phil won their matches quickly and sealed the match for us," said Goodman. "Those guys have definitely stepped up their game and made us a much stronger team at the top of the lineup."
Â
Biola improves to 2-4 with today's win and will go on to face Westmont at home this Saturday in their third Golden State Athletic Conference match of the year.
