Eagles Cash In Gallarda’s Game One Gem

Jimmy Gallarda’s complete game win earns Biola a doubleheader split with Corban.

Jerron Largusa was a monster at the plate in Biola's 4-1 victory on Thursday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For a baseball team, predictability has two sides. On the one hand, predictability can provide some comfort because the team knows exactly what it needs to do to win. But on the other hand, predictability can lead to frustration when a team does not complete its winning formula.

The Eagles felt both sides of the predictability coin on Thursday against the Corban Warriors, getting a great start from Jimmy Gallarda and 10 hits in the 4-1 game one win and suffering a 8-2 loss in game two after only five runners reached base safely.

Biola has produced at least seven hits in all eight of its wins this season while getting four hits or less in .750 percent of its losses.

BU scored in the first inning for the third straight contest in game one, employing a leadoff double from Sam Thorne and an RBI single from Jerron Largusa to earn a short lived 1-0 lead.

Largusa had the best line of any hitter in game one: 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

Corban immediately tied the score in the top of the second. Two hits and a hit-and-run play opened the door for an RBI groundout from outfielder Benjamin Liogan before Gallarda worked out of the second and third base jam with a popout and a swinging strikeout.

Soon after the second it became apparent that Gallarda found his "A" stuff on the rubber. Gallarda retired 12 Corban batters in a row between the third and seventh innings, getting 10 of those outs on ground balls.

The righty's clinical approach to the strike zone allowed him to come back out for the ninth inning with a three-run lead and 95 pitches. Gallarda would conclude the Eagles' first complete game of the year one pitch 106 by inducing a double play ball from DH Zach Penrod and finished hits start with eight strikeouts and 22 first-pitch strikes.

"I think Jimmy looked the best he has all year in game one and we are excited for what the future holds for him," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "When you get that kind of performance it gives the offense the grace they need to produce just enough to win."

By surrendering only three hits and two free passes, Gallarda kept his game score near perfect game/no-hitter quality with his mark of 89 and lowered his ERA to 1.74. You can read more about game score here: http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/game-score/

Biola also had five doubles in game one and used two of them in the sixth inning to plate two runs even though Corban reliever Kris Jackson retired the first two men he faced that inning.

The Corban pitching was good all day despite being bested by Gallarda in game one. A trio of righty's limited the Eagles two just two hits and five baserunners in the second contest. Reliever Caleb Henry earned the victory in the 8-2 win for Corban after collecting three strikeouts in four hitless innings.

"You have to credit Corban for pounding the zone and still coming with a big desire to win despite playing a bunch of games in a row," said Sullenger. "They didn't really hit the ball hard in the [five-run] fourth inning but they executed in a bunch of spots to keep runners moving. That was frustrating for our offense because we couldn't really get it started.  But it also goes to show that the runs they scored are a credit to them rather than indicating that Micah did a bad job."

Outside of the five hits and five runs Corban manufactured in the fourth with hustle baseball, Micah Beyer missed quite a few bats and threw a lot of strikeouts. Beyer reached double digits in strikeouts for the second time this season with 10 in 6.1 innings pitched and threw 24 first-pitch strikes.

These two teams are scheduled to meet again Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.
